To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HIRAM S. BLOOM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bayard, in the county of Grant and State of \Vest Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Handles; and I do hereby declare the following .to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to certain improvements in handles for use in connection with crosscut or other saws, the object being to provide a handle which is easily and firmly secured to the saw-blade and easily removed therefrom and which is made stronger, more durable, and less expensive than the handles now in use.

The invention comprises certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts whereby it is made simpler and better adapted for the purposes for which it is intended and whereby other important advantages are attained, as will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically defined in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a portion of a saw having my improved handle attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section thereof, and Fig. 3 is a detail view of some of the parts removed. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of a part of the device.

1 represents a handle, which may be of any desired configuration; but in this instance it is shown as a round piece having a center bore 1, through which a rod 2 passes. This rod 2 is provided at its lower extremity with an opening 2 to receive the end of the saw 3, and the upper end is threaded to engage the internal threads of a stem 4, which passes down into the opening 1.fro1n the top of the handle. This stem is preferably made in one piece, with an enlarged head 5, which serves the purpose of a nut by which to rotate the stem and thus draw the edge of the saw firmly against a washer 6, located at the lower end of the handle. A collar 7 is shrunk upon the lower end of the handle, and its extremity is provided with an annular flange 7, provided at intervals with openings to receive hooks 6, fastened to the washer 6, as shown by Fig. 4. In this way a removal of the washer is prevented until the hooks are withdrawn from the openings referred to.

The upper portion of the handle is provided with a collar 8, having internal ribs 8, which are adapted to engage grooves 9, located in the upper extremity of the handle. These grooves and the ribs located upon the collar 8 serve to prevent a rotative movement of the latter, as well as to more firmly secure the same in place.

As will be observed by referenoeto Fig. 2, the upper end of the handle does not quite reach the upper edge of the collar 8, and a washer 10, provided with an opening through which the stem 4 may pass, is located between the enlarged head 5 and the upper extremity of the collar, so that as the nut is tightened or released the wear will be exerted upon the washer. The head 5 may be round in contour or any other desired shape, but by preference I form it with flattened sides and projecting shoulders 5, so that the latter may be readily grasped by the hand and moved, and the former will serve as a means for receiving adjustment by a wrench, if found necessary.

The internal threaded stem 4 extends through a portion of the handle 1, and thus provides a suitable opening for the reception of oil or other lubricant.

The collar 8, with its internal ribs 8 engaging the grooves 9 in the handle, prevents separating of the upper end of the handle incident to the pressure of the enlarged head thereover instituted by the tension of the rod 2. The ribs 8 hold the said collar in its adjusted position and prevent the same from turning when the head 5 is adjusted to tighten the saw against the bottom of the handle through the mediumof the stem 4 and rod 2. The pressure exerted by the head 5 would tend to break the upper end of the handle 1 if it were not for the intermediate position of the said collar 8. It will also be observed that the upper termination of the said. collar extends above the upper end of the handle and the washer 1O bears directly on said collar, and this relieves the pressure of thehead 5 from the said upper end of the handle.

It will thus be seen that my invention provides in a simple and inexpensive manner a handle which is applicable to saws of various characters, which can be quickly and easily adjusted to the saw, and which may be readily removed when desired.

Modifications may be made Without departing from the essential features of my invention, and I do not Wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise details of construction and arrangement of parts herein shown and described, reserving the right to make such changes and alterations therein as may be considered to fairly fall within its spirit and scope.

Having thus described myinvention, What I claim as new, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is

1. A handle for the purposes specified having a central bore and also provided with an upper flattened portion and projecting shoulders with grooves between the same, a collar on the lower end of the handle having openings therein, a washer resting against the said collar and provided with hooks to engage said openings, a cap or collar mounted on the upper extremity of the handle having inwardlyextending ribs to engage the grooves at the upper reduced end of said handle, the opening through said collar conforming to the shape of the said upper extremity of the handle, an enlarged head having a depending stem extending into the bore of the handle, and provided with internal screw-threads, and a rod having an opening at one end to receive the end of the saw therein, and at the opposite end screw-threaded to engage the said stem, substantially as described.

I11 a device of the character set forth, the combination of a tubular handle having an upper reduced end with grooves therein, a collar, an enlarged head having a depending hollow stem extending into the bore of the handle and provided with internal screwthreads, a rod having an opening in its lower end to engage the saw and on its upper end screw-threaded to adj ustably fit the said stem, a collar With inwardly-extending ribs to engage the said grooves, and having an opening therethrough to conform to the shape of the upper end of the handle, a washer interposed between the said enlarged head and collar, a collar resting against the lower end of the handle and having an annular flange, and a lower washer bearing against the said flange and having an opening therethrough of less diameter than the bore of the handle, substantially as described.
