Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS STEFANI, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
MODE OF SETTING STONES IN JEWELRY.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 5,50l, dated October 2, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, FRANCIS STEFANI, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Method of Setting Stones in Jewelry; and I do hereby deelare that the following` is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, which willenable others skilled in the art to make and use 'the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part ot' this specification, in whiehp Figure l is a front view of a breast-pin having my improvement; Fig. 2 is a side view, and Fig. 3 is a rear view ot' the same. Fig. 4 is a erossseotion, taken in the line x w, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate like part-s.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in the mode of setting stones in jewelry, whereby the stone is held in a reliable manner, and is easily removed at any time for changing the stone, if desired, as hereinafter explained.'
A, in the acoompanyin drawings, is the gold or metallic jewel-frame, and G is the jewel. The frame A is provided with two fixed iingers, e e, which reach over the edge of the stone or jewel G and clamp it in place. The fixed clamps e e hold the ends of the stone. There are also twoI side-clamps, c c, but thesel are removable for inserting or displacing the stone. These removable clamps or tin gers c c have each a tonen, which its into a mortise, b, Fig. 4, in the frame A, and they are held in place by screws d upon the rear side of the trame, as shown by Fig. 4, and also by rear view Fig. 3. To make the screws cl d more se cure in their position, each have a small setsorew, f, Figs. l and 3, which screws through the frame .A at right angles to the screws d, and are screwed against the said screws d, so as tojam them in place.
It is really necessary to have but one of the clamps c removable for inserting the stelle G,
as the stone is readily slipped edgewise into its seat when three of the four clamps are xed in their places. f
This mode otl sett-ing stones may apply to all kinds of jewelr t, such as iinger-rings, cameos, Ste.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The mortised jewelframe A, adjustable clampingtin gers c c., and retaining-screws d d, constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
The above speoiiication of my invention signed by me this 14th day of June, 1866.
FRAN@` IS STEFANI.
