Description

UN TED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES MULOHAHEY, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 58,459, dated October 2, 1866; antedated September 15', 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, CHARLES MULGHAHEY, of Springfield, Hampden county, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Lamps and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a'top view of a lamp with my invention attached. Fig. 2 is a partial top view of the same with the ring A removed. Fig. 3 is a side view, and Fig. 4 a vertical cross-section. t
My improvementconsists in applying to a lamp, around the outside of the tube to which the burner is fastened, a ring of some absorbent material, which shall retain until evaporated such oil as shall from any cause be drawn up and flow over the top of the burner orwick, and thus preventing the lamp from becoming covered with oil on the outside, as is so often the case with ordinary 1amps,particularl y such as use kerosene or coal-oil, to which this invention more particularly applies.
Its construction is as follows: Around the brass tube 0, in which the burner is screwed, and a short distance from it,.I form a ring, a,
ceive the oil without drying or caking, and
can so readily be renewed with so slight expense.
It will be seen that in this way I obtain a cheap and simple remedy for this disagreeable defect of oil-lamps without in any way interfering with their burning qualities or materially altering their appearance.
N ow, having described my invention, what' I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The application to an oil-lamp of an absorbent or retaining material around outside of the tube 0, substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
