IMPROVEMENT IN VALVES FOR STEAMrENGINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,386., dated August 21, 1866.
.To all whom ft may concern f Be it known that we, WM. H. SANGSTER and JUSTIN O. VARE, of Titusville, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Engines; and we do hereby declare that the following' is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the aecompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the annexed drawings, A represents the boiler of the engine, which is secured upon a furnace to be constructed in any of the known and usual ways. 'Ille forni of the boiler will be seen in Figure 2, being made concave on the under side, so that a larger surface will be exposed to the action of the fire. One or more. lues may be made in this boiler, as may be desired. 4
B represents the steam-cylinder, which is secured upon the top of the boiler. O represents a metallic frame. which is secured upon the boiler, and which passes back from the stcamcylinder to the rear of the boiler. This frame-workV answers the purpose of supporting the shaft upon which the balance-wheel is secured, and also for forming slides for| the outer end of the piston-rod.
The stearnlchest E is secured upon top of the cylinder B. @represents the pitman which connects the piston-rod with the shaft of the balance-wheel.
The peculiar internal construction of the steamchest is shown in Fig. 3, whereit will be seen that Grepresents a steam-tube, formed, as shown, with three openings in ittwo, as seen at o o', for the admission of steam from the cylinder, and 011e, at n, for allowing the steam to escape into the escape-pipe. The pipe Gis placed loosely,T in the steam-chest, with its openings 0 0 arranged to correspond with and t over the openings i i in the steam-cylinder.
Upon the pipe G are two small projections, fr, which pass through the openings yi t into the steam-chest. These projections are oper ated upon by means of the piston-head F. At each stroke of the piston the head F strikes against these projections x, and, moving the pipe G longitudinally, allows the steam which cornes in through the pipe k into the chest E to pass alternately into the cylinder through the openingst'.. When the piston-head approaches and strikes one of the projections x, it moves the slide-pipe G, so that steam is allowed to enter the cylinder Close to the piston-head and force it back to the other end of the cylinder, where the head again moves the slide G, and steam rushes in against the opposite side of the head, as before. Thus, by the operation of the piston-head, these Acut-offs are worked. The steam escapes through the openings w and s. J represents the pipe which conveys steam from the boiler to the steam-chest.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as ne\v,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is i The steam-chest, the steam-cylinder, andthe sliding pipe G, constructed and arranged to operate in the manner and for the purpose herein specified.
