T 0 all whom, it m/I/I/ concern-- Be it known that 1, CHARLES M. CARNAHAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newport, in the county of Campbell and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Letter-Files,of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in permanent and temporary files usually in book form for the filing of letters or other papers; and it has for its object the production of a simple and novel holder for the index-sheets, which is very cheap in construction and efficient in action.

The novelty of my invention will be hereinafter set forth and specifically pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a transverse section,in end elevation of a 00111- pleted file embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a corresponding broken view showing the manner of introducing the filing pin or pins for the index-leaves. Fig. 3 is an enlarged bottom plan view of the upper filingpin holder. Fig. 4 is an inverted perspective view of the same. Fig. 5 is an enlarged plan view of the lower pin-holder. Fig. 6 is an enlarged perspective view of a pin and its holders connected together, as when in the case. Fig. 7 is a detail sectional view on the dotted line so a; of Fig. 6.

The same letters of reference are used to indicate identical parts in all the figures.

The filing-case A is of the usual or any suitable construction, preferably in book form, with a rounded back B, hinged lid 0, and hinged front flap D. Before applying the cover C E to the back B, which is preferably mortised or gained to receive them, as seen at a, I embed into these mortises tangs b, bent at right angles from sheet-metal strips F G, Fig. 6, which strips constitute the filing-pin holders, and are in pairs located in vertical alinement with one or more pairs to a filing-case. I prefer to use two pairs, one near each end of the case to hold two filing-pins in the position usually occupied by such pins in ordinary filing-cases, well known to the public.

The lower holder G, as well as the upper holder, is covered and held in place by the covers G E when they are secured to the back B, and,as seen in Figs. 1 and 6,the lowerholder has its inner end within the case bent up and provided with a perforation c. The upper holder F is likewise provided with a perforation (I, Fig. 3, and slits e are cut from this perforation to form a locking-ear f, which can be bent downward, as seen in Figs. 2 and 4.

Each filing-pin II has at its upper end a head g, and has its lower end bent substantially at right angles, as seen at h. The pin or pins are first inserted through the perforations in the index-leaves I and then have their lower ends inserted through the perforations c in the lower holders G, as seen in Fig. 2. They are then pushed back until the heads y can be inserted through the opening 2', afiorded by bending down the ears. f, and are passed up through said openings, and finally the ears f are bent back into place to confine the pins in the perforations d and prevent their heads from being drawn therethrough.

The above construction and method of application form a very durable and secure fastening for the filing-pins, which cannot by any possibility be withdrawn from the cases without destroying the case.

To reinforce the ears f when bent up, I bend under the projecting end j of the holder, as seen in Fig.7, so that it lies directly under and aids in supporting the ear f.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim 1.
