SAMUEL II. SCIIENCK, OF ZINSVILLE, INDIANA.
COMBINED C AM P- sTooL AND COT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 571,579, dated November 17', 1896,
Application led March 16, 3.896.
To mail whom, it may concern:
Be it kn own that LSAMUEL I-I. SCHENCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Zionsville, in the county of Boone and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Camp-Stool and Cot; and I do declare the followingtobe a full, clear, and 'exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a novel arrangement of Well-known appliances by which a cot-bed may be converted into a number of camp-stools, and vice versa; and it consists of a peculiar arrangement of separable hinges, in combination with camp-stools by which the stools are connected to form a cot-bed separated, or the Whole folded into a small compass when connected as a cot, as will be more fully described hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Myobject is to provide a folding cot which may be readily converted into a number of camp-stools, and, when desired, reconverted into a cot, and closely folded When desired for storage or shipping, and with this object in view my invention fulfils the need of such an article, is furthermore easily and cheaply manufactured, of few parts, and durable in use.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of stool-frames connected as a cot. Fig. 2 is a top plan of cot. Fig. 8 is an end elevation of one of the camp-stools or section of the cot detached, and Fig. e is a side view of cot Without cover when folded.
In the drawings, A, B, (l, D, and E represent the detachable sections of the cot, cach section being a complete camp-stool when separated from the others and having their respective covers a, l), c, d, and e. The X- legs h and 'i of the stools are made, preferably, of wood, as Well as the end legs fand g, which latter differ from the others principally in Serial No, 583,312. (No model.)
being made somewhat longer at the upper ends to form an elevation for a head-rest. Each stool or section has a pair of top rails R to Which the cover is secured, and beloiv the center are tiebraces 7e and Z, which, when the legs are folded, lie in notches 7s and Z' in the opposite legs. Each pair of X-legs are secured together near their centers by means of the pivotal rivets u, Which are upset iush at outside of legs fi ai. In setting up and connecting the X-legs the leg e' is set outside ofv the leg 71 and in each stool these are crossed in alternating directions, so that when the stools are placed together to form a cot the legs i of adjoining sections A and B are parallel, While the legs vl of adjoining sections B and C, although parallel, lean in the opposite direction or at a reverse angle. This alter nation is necessary in order that when the cot is to be folded the sections lap backward and forward against each other. Each leg 'i is provided With tivo or more eyes m, protruding beyond the edge of the leg, so that when the legstof two stools are placed against each other the eyes of the two stools are adjacent and register with each other, permitting the insertion through them of the rod or hingepin n. XVhen the cot is in use as such, these hinges securely hold together all the sections, and simply withdrawing the rods separates the sections, when they become convenient camp-stools.
The tops or covers a, h, dicci, may be made of any suitable material and may be secured to the rails in any suitable manner, but for a cheap and portable combination canvas is usually used, While the Whole may be made on a more elaborate scale throughout when desirable.
rThe various views so fully illustrate my invention that further description is not deemed necessary.`
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s#- l. The herein-described cot comprising a number 0f folding camp-stools provided with loose pin-hinges situated alternately at each side of the Got, whereby the stools or sections of Jhe C015 :we connected and ena-bling them to be folded in a serpentine manner, substantially as and foi` the purposes shown and described.
2. The combination of the series of stools to make in cot, the adjoining X-legs of which :we alternately provided with alined eyes, and the rods or pintles Completing the hinge,
whereby Said stools may be folded o1" eolzo lapsed, or separat-ed from each other, substantially as shown and described.l
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
SAMUEL H. SCI-IENCK. YVitn esses E. T. SILVIU'S, CHARLES MARIEN.
