UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
GEORGE M. GITHENS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN WATER-GAGES FOR STEAM-GENERATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,1] 8, dated August 14, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE M. GITHENS, of the city, county, and State of New York, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Steam and Water Gages; and I hereby declare that the following is a full and clear description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and which represent a vertical central section of the invention.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
The nature of my invention consists, first, in providing steam and water gages with a pipe connecting the lower part of the Watergage with the bottom of the boiler, thereby causing a free and continuous circulation ot' water, which will prevent the stopping up of the connections of the water-gage with the boiler, which very often happens with the old method of connecting, causing the water in the gage to stay at the point'where it was when the stoppage took place, while the water might get so low in the boiler as to be very dangerous before it would be discovered by the engineer in charge; second, in the threeway cock, so arranged in the connection of the pipe with the water-gage that in case of accident to the glass tube by turning the cock one-fourth around it closes the connection with the glass tube and leaves the opening the same, so that the circulation is still unobstructed, and the passage kept clear and ready for operation when the glass tube shall have been replaced.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to described its construction and operation.
A represents the side of an ordinary steamboiler to which the water-gage Bis secured, of which 0 represents its steam-col'inection, and D its water-connection, with the boiler a little above and a little below the water-line. In this watenconnection D, I arrange quite close to the gage a three-way cock, E, uniting with it a second water-connection by means of a pipe, F, leading to the bottom part of the boiler in a manner so that the said cock E can be set to stop all connections of the boiler with the gage, or that all connections are communicating with the gage, as shown in the drawings, or that either one connection only is communicating with the gage.
From the foregoing it may be readily seen that by having a communication of the gage with the bottom part of the boiler a constant circulation of the water must take place, and thereby prevent the connections being stopped.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The arrangement of the secondary waterpipe F, with the connection D, in combination with the gage B, for the purpose of obtaining a constant flow through said pipe and connections, substantially as herein set forth.
2. The three-way cock E, in combination with the connecting pipe F and D, arranged for the purpose substantially as herein specitied.
GEO. M. GITHENS.
