M. FALK. AIR. TIGHT? PAGKAGE.
N0. 571,112. Patented Nov.'10, "1896.

: UNITED STATES PATENT GFE CE.
MOSES FALK, OF NEV YORK, N. Y.
AIR-TIGHT PACKAGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 571,112, dated November 10, 1896. Application filed January 16, 1896. Serial No. 575,668- (No model.)
To (LZZ whom it nmy concern.-
Be it known that I, MOSES FALK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Air-Tight Packages, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide animproved storage package or receptacle by means of which the interior thereof will be kept air-tight and its contents preserved from being affected by the outside air, and also by means of which the package may be readily sealed or opened without injuring or destroying the package.
The invention consists of a package constru cted and arranged as hereinafter set forth and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 illustrates the inner cover of the package. Fig. 2 is an illustration, partly broken away, of the invention, showing the inner and outer covers. Figs. 3 and 4 are illustrations of modified forms of the cover.
In carrying out this invention a package or receptacle D is provided of sheet metal or other suitable material and of any desired shape' The receptacle D is provided with two covers, an inner cover 0 and an outer cover E. The inner cover 0 is formed with an upwardly-turned flange A and has a suitable handle, as, for example, the ring B, which folds fiat against the cover 0. The cover 0 is adapted to fit snugly against the inner wall of the receptacle D and to rest upon a ledge or shoulder D or other formed suitable means in or upon the inner wall of the receptacle by crimping or in any other suitable manner. The outer coverE is formed with the depending flange E and fits snugly over the top of the receptacle D.
The use and operation of this device just described will be readily understood.
It is well known that trouble and annoyance are occasioned in opening the air-tight packages now in use, owing to the fact that the covering is soldered on the package in such a manner that it is necessary to cut or break the package in order to open the same, and thereby the package and its contents are often destroyed and-the hands injured. By means of this package its contents and the hands are not subject to these dangers, and the delay and inconvenience in opening the package are done away with.
- To open the box or package, take off the cover E, then take hold of the ring 13 and draw the cover 0 upward, and then we have the package open without any inconvenience or delay, and leaving the package and its contents in good condition and without being destroyed or mutilated.
The cover 0 can be made in various shapes to fit the form of the box or package and can be made of any suitable metal. The object of having the rim or edge turned upward is that the cover can be pressed tightly against the contents of the package without cutting or destroying it.
This invention is particularly useful and important in packing tobacco. It is well known that the manner in which tobacco is ordinarily packed does not prevent it from becoming dry and in the course of time unfit for use. By means of this improved package the contents are kept air-tight and the tobacco moist, and the evaporation which takes place in other packages does not occur. The flange A of the inner cover 0 fitting snugly against the inner wall of the receptacle B, the cover 0 slides into and out of place after the manner of a piston, and with the outer cover E provides an air-tight and water-tight cover.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. A storage package or receptacle, consisting of a receptacle provided on its inner walls with a support for an internal cover, said inner wall being vertical upward from said internal support, in combination with an internal cover having a vertical flange extending upward from said cover and a handle on its top, said vertical flange fitting snugly against the inner wall of said receptacle and said cover being adapted to be pushed into place against said internal support with a piston-like movement, and an exterior cover with a depending flange adapted to slide down and fit snugly over the top of the receptacle, as herein set forth.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a storage package or receptacle, consisting of a receptacle of sheet metal formed with an internal bead on its inner Wall adjacent to the top of the receptacle, serving as a support for an internal cover, said inner Wall being vertical upward from said internal head, in combination with an internal cover formed with an upturned vertical flange and a handle on its top, said vertical flange fitting snugly against the inner Wall of said receptacle and said cover being adapted to be pushed into the receptacle against said bead, and a cover having a depending flange adapted to fit snugly over the top of the receptacle and with the internal cover form an air-chamber as herein set forth.
A storage package or receptacle consisting of a receptacle having a straight, open, vertical end or top, in combination with an internal-cover having an upturned vertical flange fitting snugly against the internal wall of the receptacle, and a handle on its top, said cover being adapted to be pushed into the receptacle with a piston-like movement, and an external cover formed with a depending flange and fitting snugly over the top of the receptacle and forming with the internal cover, an air-chamber, as herein set forth.
Signed at the city, county, and State of New York this 13th day of January, A; D. 1890.
