INKSTAND.
No. 571,046. Patented Nov. 10, 1896.
Wl TIVE SSE S:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.`
JAMES W. JACOBUS, OF GREAT NECK, NEW' YORK.
INKSTAND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 571,046, dated November 10, 1896. Application filed February 14, 1896. Serial No. 579,211. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES W. JACOBUS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Great Neck, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inkstands, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying; drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to inkstands, and to that class thereof which are adapted to be placed in ink-wells or similar receptacles in desks, tables, dro.; and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this class which is simple in construction and which is adapted for kuse in schools, offices, and 'other places.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following` specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which-- Figure 1 is a central vertical section of my improved ink stand or bottle; Fig. 2, a plan view thereof, and Fig. 3 a section at right angles to the section shown in Fig. 1.
In the practice of my invention I provide an ink stand or bottle comprising a cylindrical body portion A, having a detachable bottom B, in which is formed a circular depression or chamber b, and the body portion A is provided with a closed top a, and located at one side thereof is a tube C, which is open at both ends and the lower end of which extends downwardly to near the bottom B and terminates immediately over the circular chamber or depression b.
The top a is provided with a sliding` plate D, which is adapted to cover the upper open end of the tube C, and said plate is provided with a knob or handle d, by which it is operated, and said plate is also oountersunk in the top a, as clearly shown in Figs. l, 2,' and 3.
The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. The bottle or stand is filled by removing the bottom B, and in practice said bottle or stand is preferably only partially filled, after which the bottom is again screwed on and the device is ready for use.
The circular chamber or depression b is designed to provide means for the insertion of a pen into the ink-to a suficient depth, it being understood that the pen is inserted through the tube C, and after the ink stand or bottle has been filled and inverted or held in its normal position, as shown in Fig. l, the ink will not rise in the tube C to any appreciable extent by reason of the air-pressure therein.
This device is simple in construction and comparatively inexpensive, and may be made of any desired material, and in practicethe sliding plate D is so formed as to closely fit and cover and close the upper end of the tube C when the latter is not in use.
My invention is not limited to the exact form, construction, and arrangement of the various parts thereof` as herein described, and I reserve the right to make all such alterations therein and modifications thereof as fairly come within the scope of the invention.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The herein-described ink stand or bottle, which is provided with a removable bottom in which is formed at one side thereof, a chamber or depression, said ink stand or bottle being also provided with a closed top, at one side of which is an open tube, the lower end of which projects downwardly, to near the bottom and immediately over said chamber or depression and said top being provided with a sliding plate which is adapted to close the upper end of said tube, substantially as shown and described.
2. The herein-described ink stand or bottle, l
which is composed of a body portion provided with a closed top, and a removable bottom, said removable bottom being provided at one side with a circular chamber or depression and said top being provided with an open tube, at one side, the lower end of which eX'- tends downwardly, to near the bottom, and immediately over said circular chamber, or depression, and said top being also provided with a sliding plate, which is adapted to close the open upper end of said tube, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 12th day of February, 1896.
JAMES W. JACOBUS.
