SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 571,020, dated November 10, 1896.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS H. ROYCE, a resident of Brooklyn, Kings county, State of New York, have. invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bicycle-Mitts, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to bicycle-mitts, and has for its object to produce a mitt or handcovering specially adapted for use by bicycleriders, in that the hand is not only protected, but a passage for the handle-bar is provided.

My invention consists in the construction hereinafter set forth and claimed.

. My invention will be understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an exterior perspective of a bicycle-mitt embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section thereof, the seams being omitted for the purpose of a symmetrical showing of the structure; Fig. 3 is abottom view thereof looking in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 1.

In the drawings, A is the body portion of the mitt, which is substantially of the general shape of a mulf. This body portion may be cylindrical, as shown, or other desired muif shapes. The body portion comprises an outer envelop a, in which is secured by its edges a lining 19, between which and the envelop a a suitable stuffing 0 may be provided. EX- tending entirely through the body portion is a circular longitudinal passage 00, formed by a tube (7, which is secured at its outer ends 0 to the end sections 6 of the body portion, which end section is secured by its edge e to the envelop a. The envelop C6 is open at one side, and contiguous to the edges of the said opening a gauntlet portion or section B is secured by its edges f. This gauntlet portion in the present instance comprises a frustro-conical tubular body set up at an acute angle to the axis of the opening through the tube d and is seamed, as a g, and is shown as provided with a separate triangular gore h, which is united to the edge of the opening in the body portion by its edge o.

' The section 6 is apertured, as at C, for the passage of a thumb of the wearer, so that when desired the thumb may be projected through the aperture to operate the bell or brake connected with or contiguous to the handle-bar.

In use it will be observed that the tube d Serial No. 574,314. (No modeL) of my improved bicycle-mitt is interposed between the handle-bar and the hand of the wearer, so as to prevent the hand from becoming cold by contact with the handle-bar.

Furthermore, it will be observed that by the passage so extending entirely through the mitt the wearer is enabled to slide the mitt to any position upon the handle-bar or to readily remove the mitt therefrom. Thus, for instance, when it is necessary to apply the brake or ring the bell the wearer has but to slide the mitt along the handle-bar until it reaches a position where he is enabled to project his thumb through the aperture in the mitt and apply it to the operating-handle of the brake or bell.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. As a new article of manufacture a bicycle-mitt comprising a muff portion and a gauntlet portion, the said muff portion having a longitudinal passage extending entirely through the muff and open at. both ends for the passage of the handle-bar, a hand-receiving recess between the outer envelop of the muff portion and the walls of the longitudinal passage and an opening in the periphery of the mulf communicating with the handreceiving recess, the gauntlet portion being a secured to the periphery of the muff portion and forming a continuation of the opening therein, substantially as described.

2. Asa new article of manufacture a bicycle-mitt comprising a muff portion and a gauntlet portion, the said mufif portion having a longitudinal passage extending entirely through the muff and open at both ends for the passage of the handle-bar, a hand-receiving recess between the outer envelop of the muff port-ion and the walls of the longitudinal passage, a digit-opening in the end of the muff portion in open communication with the said hand-receiving recess, and an opening in the periphery of the muff communicating with the hand-receiving recess, the gauntlet portion being secured to the periphery of the muff portion and forming a continuation of the opening therein, substantially as described.
