Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
B. FRANK EARLY, OF PALMYRA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVED SHOE-CLEANER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,102, dated August 14, 1866.
T0 all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, B. FRANK EARLY, of Palmyra, in the county of Lebanon and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Shoe-Gleaner 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, forming part ot this specilication, in which- Y Figure 1 is an under view or an inverted plan ot' my invention; Fig. 2, a vertical sec tion ot' the same, taken in the line :r m, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre` spending part-s.
This invention relates to a new and improved shoe-cleaner designed to supersede the use ot mats now used for such purpose; and it consists of a frame constructed andarran ged in such a manner that corn-husks and other suitable substances may be secured in such a manner as to form a durable efeient mat or foot-cleaner, the frame admitting of the material secured within being removed when worn by use and new material adjusted in its place.
A represents a quadrilateral frame, composed ot four side pieces, a a b b, the sidepieces, a a, being opposite each other, and each having two mortises, c c, made in them to receive tenons d d on the ends ot' the side pieces, b b, the mortises c c being longer than the tenons d, in order to admit of the side pieces, b b, having a certain degree of lateral adjustment, which is effected by turning a nut,e, on a screw-rod, B, passing centrally through the side pieces, b b, as shown clearly in Fig. l. `'lhe side pieces, a a, are kept snugly in contact with vshoulders f, formed by the cutting otl the tenons by means of two screw-rods, G C, which pass through the side pieces, a'a,
near their-end. In the inner side ot' one of the side pieces, b, a rectangular groove or'recess, g, is made, extending nearly the whole length of` said side `piece between the bars a a. The other side piece, b, is slotted entirely through, as shown at h, the slot h being equal in length to the recess g.
Drepresents metal rods, which pass through the slot h in one side piece, b, and enter the recess g in the other side piece; and E repre` I sents husks of corn or other suitable material, which is doubled around the rods'D, and is held or secured in position by the side pieces, a a, the husks on the several rods D being clamped and held in close contact by the side pieces, a a, a sufficient number of rods D being used, according to the thickness or character of the material doubled on them.
From the above description it will be seen that the husks E, or other material used or doubled Aon the rods D, forni the lnat on which the shoe or boot is rubbed or cleaned; and it will .further be seen that when the corn-husks or other substance becomes worn by use it can be readily det-ached from the frame and replaced by new material.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A frame composed ot adjustable side pieces., substantially as shown, in combination with rods having corn-husks or other suitable substance doubled or adjusted around them and fitted or clamped within the frame, to form a new and improved mat, for the purpose specilied.
B. FRANK EARLY.
