CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 570,559, dated November 3, 1896.
Application filed February 16, 1894. Serial No. 500,338. (No model.)

Be it known that I, CHARLES H. MCLAUGH- LIN, a citizen of. the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Car-Couplings, which improvement. is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a car-coupling formed of novel parts, as hereinafter described and claimed, whereby the knuckles remain coupled should the axial pin of either knuckle be broken or displaced and the drawheads be prevented from dropping in case of the breaking of the same.
Figure l represents a top or plan view of a car-coupling embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a partial side elevationand partial vertical section. Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal vertical section of opposite couplings in coupled position. Fig. 4 represents a perspective view of a detached portion.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referringto the drawings, A designates the head of the draw-bar, and B designates the knuckle, which is connected therewith by the vertical pivot or pin C. Depending from the upper wall of the head A, in the chamber for the limb D of the knuckle, is a tongue E, and in the upper side of said limb is a groove F, which is adapted to receive said tongue E, or vice versa, when the coupling is eifected, it being noticed that said tongue and groove then extend in transverse directions and cause the knuckle to be interlocked with the head A independent of the pin G, which engages with the side of the limb when occupying the position shown dotted in Fig. l, so that should the pin C or the part of the head around the same break the knuckle will remain locked with the head, owing to the holding action of the tongueE in the groove F. In the limb H, on the front 'side of the same, are horizontal tongues and grooves J, it being noticed, as in Fig. 3, that the tongues of the limb of one knuckle enter the grooves of the limb of the opposite knuckle, and vice versa, whereby the knuckles may interlock and thusbe prevented from dropping, as will be seen in Fig. 3, whether the couplings are at unequal heights or not, in case of the breaking or disengagement of either one of the draw-bars. In the head A is an opening K, and in the limb H of the knuckle is an opening L, said openings being adapted to receive couplingpins when it is desired to employ a coupling-v link should the opposite car be not provided with a knuckle or either knuckle be broken or be rendered inoperative. s
In the head Ais arecess M, which extends into and through the body of said head, from the rear of the under side thereof, and is adapted yto permit the introduction and application of a coupling-link into said head when so required, in which case said link may be engaged by coupling-pins in theopening K in the head or opening L in the knuckles.
B' designates a projection on the opposite side of the head of the draw-bar from that to which the knuckle is pivoted, said projection serving to prevent undue lateral movement of the limbs II of the other locked knuckle locked to said knuckle B, thereby keeping the tongue and grooves J of the said knuckles lowering of the free end of a draw-bar to which said locked knuckle is attached in case of its detachment from a car.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is
In a car-coupling, a draw-head having ka knuckle pivoted thereto, the projection B on said head opposite said knuckle, said knuckle having two limbs, one of which is provided with transverse grooves in its upper and lower faces, and the other limb having horizontal grooves and tongues, on its sides, said draw-head having a chamber with vertical tongues adapted to enter said transverse grooves and the locking-pin G entering an opening in said draw-head, said projection B' preventing lateral movement of the knuckle locked or coupled with said pivoted knuckle, said parts being combined substantially as described.
