NiTn STATES DAVID D. TOAL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 579,907, dated March 30, 1897.
Application filed June 16, 1896. Serial No. 595,727. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID D. TOAL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, inthe county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Garbage-Receivers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in garbage and ash receivers; and the object is to provide a device for this purpose so constructed that no disagreeable odors can be emitted to breed disease and endanger life, and, further, to so construct the parts that burned coal may be readily and quickly cleared of ashes without subjecting the ashes to the action of the wind. y
I will describe a device embodying my invention, and then point out the novel features in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a front elevation for a device embodying` my invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section, and Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the body portion or garbage and ash receiver, provided with a downwardly and forwardly inclined bottom a, having an outlet a at its lowest portion for the discharge of liquids that may be contained in the garbage placed in the receiver.
Supported on cleats within the body por-V tion A is a receptacle A', in which garbage and ashes are to be dumped. This receptacle may be removed and inserted through an' opening in the front of the body portion, said opening being normally closed by a hinged door, as plainly shown in the drawings.
The receptacle A has a perforated bottom a2, through which liquid may drip or iiow into the bottom of the body portion. The body portion is provided with a top cover A2, hinged at one side and having a-locking device at the oppositeor front side, consisting of a bar B, pivoted at its upper end to the cover and having a notch b intermediate of its ends, adapted to engage with a crank-shaft B', having bearings in the front and back walls of the body portion near its top. One end of the bar B extends downward over the front of the body portion, and is adapted to be secured in a locking position by means of a cam-plate B2,
pivoted to the body portion A, and having a iingerpiece b', by taking hold of which the cam-plate may be turned into or out of e11- gagement with the bar B. It will be seen by this construction that the shaft B serves as a part of the cover-securing means as Well as a sieve-operating shaft, as will now be described.
C designates a sieve for sifting coal. It is shown as movable in the upper portion of the' body portion A on ways c, arranged longitudinally in said body portion and suiciently low to allow the closing of the top cover when the sieve is in place.
From a connection c on the bottom of the sieve O a pitman c2 extends and is adapted for detachable engagement with a crank portion c3 of the shaft B. As a means for providing this detachable connection, I form a hook port-ion c4 at the outer end of the pitman, which may be engaged with the crank when the sieve, filled with ashes, is placed in position. The sieve may be reciprocated back and forth, upon turning the crank-shaft B', by means of a crank-handle c5, attached to its outer end.
It will be seen that a device embodying my invention will be of great utility as a household article, and that it can be manufactured at a small cost, thus placin git within the reach of all.
Of course a device made in accordance with my invention is not limited as to size, and very large ones maybe employed for the use of tenement-houses, hotels, restaurants, and the like.
Having described my invention, What I claim is v The combination with a garbage-receiver having a hinged-top cover, a sieve-operating shaft having bearings in the front and rear walls of the receiver, a bar pivoted to the cover and adapted to engage with the shaft, for` securing the cover, and a cam-latch on the body of the receiver for locking said bar, substantially as specified.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 28th day of January, A. D. 1896.
DAVID D. TOAL.
