WVLG. LAMB.
INKSTA ND.
Patented Mar. 30, 1897;
WITNESSES WILLIS GOODSELL LAMB,
rricn,
OF PARK CITY, UTAH.
INKSTAND.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO, 579,591, dated March 30, 1897. Application filed February 18, 1896. $erial No. 579,758. (No model.) i
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that LWILLIs GooDsELL LAMB, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Park City, in the-county of Summit and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inkstands, of which the following is a specification, reference bein g had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to inkstands and to that class thereof known as fountain-inkstands; and the object of the invention is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and comparatively inexpensive.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a transverse vertical section of my improved inkstand, and Fig. 2 a plan view thereof.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, A represents the body portion of my improved inkstand, which, as shown in the drawings, is rectangular in form, but which may be of any desired shape or style, and near the bottom and at one side thereof is an extension a, which communicates with the main body of the inkstand by a passage c which is formed by a depending partial partition c and the body of the inkstand opposite the extension to is preferably provided with a closed upwardly-inclined and horizontal partition a the object of this arrangement being to cut off or close up a part of the body portion of the bottom of the inkstand opposite the extension at, and to thus form a closed chamber a The top B of the body portion of the inkstand is provided with a filling-orifice b,which is closed by a plug 12 in the usual manner, and the top B is also preferably provided with transverse ribs 11 which assist in giving strength thereto, and the top of the extension 0b is provided with an opening C, in which is placed a tubular plug D, having a central screw-threaded bore in which is mounted a funnel E, having a screw-threaded shank F.
By means of the funnel E, having the screwthreaded shank F, the ink-supply can be regulated to a nicety, according to the level of the ink in the reservoir or body portion A, and when filling the reservoir the funnel E must be run up to the top of the reservoir or body portion A to avoid spilling the ink. By the use of this funnel but a small surface of the ink is exposed and the loss by evaporation is slight, and by raising the funnel after one is through with writing the area of the exposed ink is reduced to a minimum, the exposed surface being only equal to the diameter of the central bore of the screw-threaded shank F. As the lowering of the screw will not permit the use of the full depth of the well or the space within the extension, I have formed the body of the reservoir, as hereinbefore described, so that the upper portion thereof Will contain the main supply of ink and that part thereof adjacent to the extension a and the bottom of said extension being recessed or lowered in order that the main body of the ink within the reservoir may be above the extension a and the well or chamber therein.
This device is simple in construction and operation and will not get out of order, and may also be quickly and easily cleaned whenever desired; and it is evident that changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages, and I reserve the right to make all such alterations therein and modifications thereof as fairly come within the scope of the invention.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent As a new article of manufacture an inkstand, a rectangular body portion, an extension at the lower part of one side. thereof, a depending partial partition forming a connecting passage between said body and said extension, a closed upwardly-inclined and horizontal partition opposite said extension and within said body, a top having an opening therein, a plug adapted to fit in said opening, transverse ribs on said top, a tubular myinventionlhave signed my name, in prescentrally-screW-threaded plug seeuredto said ence of the subscribing Witnesses, this 8th extension, and a funnel having a screwday of February, 1896.
threaded shank thereon adapted to engage \VILLIS GOODSELL LAMB.
5 said screw-threaded plug, all of the said parts WVitnesses:
being combined substantially as described. BARTON WVHERRITT,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as l EMERY W. WHITE.
