Description

UNI'I'ED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM KEARNEY, OF BELLEVILLE, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN VAHLVES FOR WATER-PIISES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,920, dated September 11, 1866.
To all lwhom it may concern:
Beit known that I, WILLIAM KEARNEY, of Bellevillc,.in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Im proved Valve for Water-Suppl y Pipes and I do hereby declare that the tollowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part ot' this specitication, in which- Figure lis a vertical section of my invention, taken in the line z .00,Fig'12; Fig. 2,-a vertical section ot the same, taken in the line y y, Fig. l.
Similar letters ot' reference indicate corre- .sponding parts.
Theobject ot' this invention is to obtain a valve for water-supply pipes which will not be rendered inoperative by means of stones, sticks, or other foreign substances interposin g themselves between the valve audits seat.
The invention has also for its object the ready starting ofthe valve under a heavy pressure ot' water, anda quick or rapid movement ot'"the valve after the same has been started, and a provision made for the escape ot' air from the valve-chest, and to prevent the freezing up of the valve in its chest.
A represents a box, provided at each side with a tubular flange, B, to which the watersupply pipe is connected. The box is of a width corresponding internally to the width ot' the valve C, the lower part of which is circular, as well as the lower end otl the box A, (see Fig. 1,) and the box A extends down below the lian ges B B sutticientl y far to allow the valve to be moved down below thc iianges, and allow the free passage ot the waterthrough the pipe.
The valve, when raised, lits snugly between the inner ends of the two flanges, and eft'ectually stops the flow of water through the supply-pipes.
The valve C is raised and lowered, opened and closed, by means of a screw, D, which passes through the top ot' the box A, and works in a nut, E, in the valve, the upper part of the screw-rod working in a stuttingbox, F, on the boxA, and having a square formed on it to receive a crank.
0n the upper part ot' the screw-rod there is littcd a worm-wheel, H, into which a screw, I, is made to gear, when necessary, said screw having its bearings in bars J J, which are secured by pivot-bolts to the sides of the box to admit of the engagement ot the screw l with the worm-wheel and ot' its disengagement therefrom.
may be applied directly to the screw D, which will, of course, move it with greater speed, the screw I being previously thrown out from the worm-wheel H.
When the valve C is fully opened it is in the lower part of the box A, and beyond the action ot' frost, being Jtoo far below the surface of the ground 5 and in order to prevent the lower part of the box becoming filled with dirt, I have a tube, a, inserted in the lower part ot box A, provided with a cock, b, having a rod, c, connected to it, which extends upward to the top of A, so that the valve may be opened to'allow dirt, air, Ste., to escape, which might otherwise prevent or materially retard the passage ofthe valve into the lower part of the box. This arrangement prevents sticks, stones7 or other foreign substances from interfering with the closing of the valve, because the valve closes by rising or movi-ng upward, and any obstruction resting upon it when open or down would be raised as the valve is raised and be thrown to one side under the action ot' the water in the pipes; and the innerI oritices ot' the iianges B B are provided with packing d, to prevent substances not dissolved in the water from passing down into the lower part ot' the box A.
Having thus described my invention, I claimv as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination and arrangement ot the valve C, box A, anges B B, cock l), screw D, worm-wheel H, and screw I, all arranged to operate substantially in the manner as and for the purpose specified.
WILLIAM KEARNEY.
W'itnesses JOHN W. Dow, PETER W. SANDFORD.
