%' wrzze y UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS R. MORRIS, OF BILLINGTON, TEXAS.
BEVEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 578,462, dated. March 9, 1897'. Application filed December 30, 1896. Serial No. 617,439. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS R. MORRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Billington, in the county of Limestone and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bevels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The present invention has relation to that class of bevel-squares adapted to be converted into a try-square through the medium of a pivoted and adjustable blade; and it consists in such a device constructed substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of the bevel, showing the blade adjusted at right angles to the stock or handle; Fig. 2, a cross-section taken through the upper end of the stock or handle and the blade when in position shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a detail view in perspective of the pointer.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the stock or handle, having a longitudinal slit a and reduced in thickness at its upper end. To the sides and at the upper end of the stock or handle are secured friction-plates B C,the former serving as an indexplate and being provided with graduations and numerals, as shown in Fig. 1. The usual pivoted and slotted blade. connects with the upper end of the stock or handle, said blade being shown at D, and extends through the slit a and is pivotally secured to the stock or handle by means of the screw-bolt E and the lever-nut F, which is provided with a handle I) for turning it.
By means of the nut and screw-bolt the slitted end of the stock or handle can bedrawn tightly against the blade D after said blade is adjusted to position, thereby securely holding it in place, and when the nut is unscrewed frictional contact of the handle or stock is released from the blade, which admits said blade to be returned to the stock or handle, as is common with this class of bevels, the pivotal connection of the blade with the stock orhandle allowing the former to. move and be adjusted on the arc of. a circle, while the slot in the blade admits of its moving and being adjusted longitudinally or lengthwise of the blade.
A pointer is provided which consists of a ring G and the right-angle plate H and point 0, which extends inwardly, as shown, to come opposite the graduations on the index-plate B.
The ring G of the pointer is for the purpose of holding it to the upper end of the stock or handle A by means of the nut F, av
portion of which nut passes through the ring, as shown in Fig. 2.
The outer extremity of the right-angle plate H passes through the elongated slot in the blade D, and when the blade is adjusted on the arc of a circle the pointer moves with it, thereby indicating by the point 0 and indexplate H the angle desired in the adjustment of the blade.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a bevel, a suitable stock or handle, a slotted blade pivotally connected to the up per end thereof, and index-plate secured to the stock or handle, a pointer consisting of a ring, an angle-plate, and a point on the extremity thereof, said pointer being connected to the stock by bolt and nut and the outer portion of the angle-plate extending through the slot in the blade, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS E. MORRIS.
