Description

G. E. POSBURGH. LAGING FOR ARTICLES 01-" WEARING APPAREL.
No Model.)
No. 577,599. Patented Peb.2,3,1897.
UNITED STATES.
PATENT OFFICE.
CALVIN E. FOSBURGH, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ON E-HALF TO EDGAR CHARLES FOSBURGH, OF NORFOLK, VIRGINIA.
LACING FOR ARTICLES OF WEARING-APPAREL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 577,599, dated February 23, 1897. Application filed May 20, 1896. Serial No. 592,275. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CALVIN E. FOSBURGH, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Lacings for Articles of Wearing-Apparel, of which the following is a specification.
I will describe an article embodying my improvement, and then point out the novel features in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings,.Figure 1 is a perspective view of a shoe having my improvement embodied in it. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the shoe open. Fig. 3 is an inside view of a portion of the shoe. Fig. 4 is a transverse section at the line 4 4, Fig. 3.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
A designates a shoe, which may be of any suitable construction, except that it has an opening a, which is closed and secured by a lacing B. Inside the two edges 0. a of the opening a are strips 0 O preferably of leather. These strips need only be fastened along'or close to the inner edge, so as to leave the upper of the shoe along the edges a at? extending outside and slightly beyond it as flaps. The strips 0 C have fitted to them pulley-blocks D. These pulley-blocks preferably consist severally of two plate-like portions of sheet metal cl d united by an integral intermediate neck 01 and secured to the strips 0 O and the edges a a by means of rivets. The plate-like portions (1 d embrace the strips 0 O and the rivets e 6 may pass through the plates and through the strips 0 C The rivet 6 may pass through the edges a of the shoe-upper without passing through the strips 0 O The rivets e are provided with pulleys D. Laces or a lace pass around the pulleys and through the pulley-blocks, so as to cross the opening a of the shoe. By pulling on these laces the side edges of the opening a may be drawn together and secured. This may be done Very quickly, because there will be no appreciable friction.
By the term rivet as used herein I wish to comprehend all devices of the nature of a rivet, even if integral with a pulley-block.
Obviously my improvement may be applied to other articles of apparel.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with an article of wearin g-apparel havingan opening, of a lacing for securing the opening, strips arranged inward of the opening, so that the edges of the opening will constitute flaps, and pulley-blocks secured to such strips and receiving the lacing,
substantially as specified.
2. The combination with an article of wearing-apparelhaving an opening, of a lacing for securing the opening, strips arranged inward of the opening so that the edges of the opening will constitute flaps, and pulley-blocks secured to such strips and receiving the lacing, the rivets d d securing the pulley-blocks to the said strips, and the rivet 01 supporting the pulleys and securing the pulley-block to the edges of the flap-like edges of the said opening, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my. name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' CALVIN E. FOSBURGH.
