SEAT ATTACHMENT FOR HAMMOCKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 577,203, dated February 16, 1897. Application filed December 21, 1896. Serial No. 616,400. (No model.)
To 61/ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ISAAC E. PALMER, of Middletown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Seat Attachments for Hammocks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in seat attachments for hammocks, the object being to provide a frame which engages the hammock, the said frame having bearings so located as to interrupt the natural curve of the hammock to form a seat, the foot end of the hammock being folded back and secured by suitable means.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents the seat attachment and hammock in side elevation in the position which they assume when supported.
Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section through the same. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the hammock and seat attachment; and Fig. 4 is an enlarged View of one of the bearings of the seat-attachment frame, showing one manner of securing one end of the folded-over end of the hammock-body.
The seat-attachment frame consists of a pair of side bars A A, which are spaced apart by cross bars or rungs a a. a The side bars A A and the rungs a a a are so arranged that as the hammock-body is passed under the rung a, over the rung a, and around the rung a its curve will be interrupted to form a seat for the occupant of the hammock. The rungs a, a, and a serve as bearings for the said body portion.
The hammock-body is denoted by B, its head portion by b, audits foot end by b. The head portion of the hammock may be provided with a suitable pillow 12 if so desired. The foot portion of the hammock-body, after being passed partially around the foot rung or bearing a is folded back and passed over the rung a between the said rung and the portion of the hammock-body which has already been passed over it. The foot portion or folded-over end I) is then secured by suitable means. The means which I have shown in the accompanying drawings for securing the foot portion of the hammock against movement consist of retaining-hooks O, which are secured to the cross-rung a in such a position as to engage the fabric of the turned-over end of the hammock-body.
The hammock body may be slid along through the frame to bring the frame and hammock-body into the desired relative positions, and the retaining-hooks C may then be caused to engage the folded-over end b of tion as to give the desired inclination to the back of the occupant.
' It is evident that slight changes may be resorted to in the construction and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. Hence I do not wish to limit myself strictly to the structure herein set forth; but
What I claim is- The combination with a hammock, of a frame engaged therewith, said frame having bearings so located as to interrupt the natural curve of the hammock-body to form a seat, the said hammock-body after passing around one of the said bearings being folded back and caused to engage another bearing, means for securing the folded-over end of the hammock and suspension-cords engaging the frame for supporting it and the hammock, substantially as set forth.
