WATER SUPBLYl APPARATUS FOR DRINKING POUNTAINS. Na 576,932. Patented Peb. 9, 1897.
ITM/ENTER? THOMAS F. \VOOD, OF NEW BEDFORD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO CHARLES I-I. HALL, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
WATER-SUPPLY APPARATUS FOR DRINKING-FOUNTAINS.
SECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 576,932, dated February 9, 1897. Llpplifmtion led November 30, 1896. Serial No. 613,861. (No model.)
To all whom it may conceive.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS F. \VOOD, of
N ew Bedford, in the county of Bristol and` State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tater-Su pply Apparatus for Drinking Troughs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to apparatus for watering horses and other live stock, in which a cup or individual trough is provided for each animal, said cup being constructed to hold only a limited supply of water and provided with an ou tlet or overow which limits the accumulation of water in the cup. In apparatus of this class it is desirable to have water constantlysupplied to the cup in order that the animal may drink whenever disposed. It is also desirable, particularly in places where the water used passes through a meter, to provide means for supplying a constant but limited stream of water to each cup and line.2 2 of Fig. l.
to enable a more ample stream to be supplied occasionally when it is desired to flush or clean My invention has for its object to provide a water-supply apparatus or fitting of simple and compact construction adapted to be adj usted to furnish a constant limited stream, thus insuring a sufficient constant supply of water for drinking purposes without undue waste of the same, and to be also adjusted to furnish a more ample stream for the purpose of iiushing or cleaning the cup.
The invention consists in the improvements which I will now proceed to describe and claim. l
Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a water-supply apparatus or fitting embodying my invention, the cup supplied by said apparatus being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 represents a section on on line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
The same letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the igures.
- In the drawings, a represents a valve-casing having an inlet a', adapted for connection with a water-supply pipe, and two outlets a? and c3, the former extending through one end of the casing and being considerably Fig. represents a section larger than the outlet a3, which extends through one side of the casing.
b represents a plug-valve, which is fitted to turn in the casing ce and has two Ways or passages ZJ2 b3. The passage b2 is larger than the passage b3, and is arranged so that when the valve is turned to one position it will connect the inlet a and the outlet a2, permitting a maximum flow of water through `the casing. Then the valve is turned to another position, one end of the passage b2 coincides with the smaller outlet a3, the passage h3 at thesamc time coinciding with the inlet ce', so that a limited stream of water passes from the inlet through the passages b3, b2, and a3, the outlet-passage a2 being closed by the valve.
To the outlet d2 is connected a vertical pipe c of sufficient capacity to accommodate .the maximum stream which flows through the easing when the inlet a' and outlet a2 are connected by the passage b2.
CZ represents a smaller pipe, which is connected with the outlet a3 and extends downwardly beside the pipe c, the two pipes being arranged to discharge streams of Water into a cup f. (Shown in dotted lines in Fig. l.) Said cup is or may be provided with inlet and outlet orifices f f2, which limit the accumulation of water in the cup.
When it is desired simply to provide an ordinary supply sufficient to meet the requirements of the animal without undue waste, the valve h is adjusted to permit water to flow through the outlet as and smaller tube d, so that a small constant stream is delivered. This stream may be further contracted by means of a cap d', screwed upon the lower end of the tube CZ and having an outlet-oriicc d2. Vhen it is desired to flush the cup to clean the same, the valve is adjusted to permit the maximum discharge of water through the outlet a2 and pipe c.
It will-be seen that the described device provides a convenient and readily-adjusted means for supplying either a small constant stream or a more powerful flushing-stream, as maybe desired.
The casing a may be extended to form another casing a5, having a plug-valve adapted to be turned to entirely shut oft the iiow of water whenever this is desired. In this con- IOO neetion it may be stated that the valve l) is not intended to entirely shut off the flow of water, but is arranged so that when at one extreme of its movement it permits a maximum flow of Water and when at the other eXtreme a minimum flow. Hence the operator, in changing from one stream to the other, has only to turn the valve I) as far as it Will go.
I elaiml. The improved Water-supply apparatus or fitting for drinking oups or troughs, the same comprising a valve-casing having an inlet adapted for Connection with a water-sup ply pipe, and two outlets of different sizes; delivery-pipes Connected with said outlets and extending to the Cup or trough to be supplied; and a valve having passages formed to deliver a maximum stream to the larger outlet, and a minimum stream to the smaller outlet.
2. The improved Water-supply apparatus or fitting for drinking oups or troughs, the same comprising a valve-easing having an inlet adapted for connection with a Water-supdetachahly Connected With the smaller pipev to contract the stream delivered thereby.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two'subsoribing Witnesses, this 24th day of November, A. D. 1896.
THOMAS F. VOOD.
