To all whom it may concern.- l
Beit known that I, WILLIAM MANN, of Galveston, in the county of Galveston and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Molding Sash-Weights; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specication.
This invention pertains to molding sashweights; and its object is to provide a mold of simple and improved construction whereby a number of weights may be cast at thev same time.
Afurther object is to provide an improved chill for forming the perforated or ringed end of the weight.
The invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a vertical sectional view with the sand rammed in the flask and the patterns in place. Fig. 2 is a sectional view showing the flask resting upon its side and in position for receiving the molten metal and with thev chills in place. Fig. 3 is a similar view after the molten metal has been poured in. Fig. lis a plan view of the mold. Fig. 5 is a detailed perspective view of the chill. Fig. 6 is a similar view with the chill-sections s eparated.
A designates the flask, which tapers toward its bottom B, and formed in 'one side thereof adjacent the bottom is the elongated opening C, through which perforated gate-pattern D is inserted. This gate-pattern is formed with the rounded central ribs D' to form the central enlarged filling-open ing, wherein the molten metal is poured. A shallow layer of sand E is first put into the mold, the gate-pattern is inserted, after which the weight-patterns F are placed in position, their lower reduced ends extending into perforations in the gatepattern, whereby the patterns are temporarily held. The ask is then filled with sand, the
same being firmly rammed around the weightpatterns. After the latter have been withdrawn the chills G are inserted at the upper ends of the molds, and the perforated cover II is putin place and secured by wedges I,driven beneath the U -shaped hooks J, projected from the sides of the flask. The liaskis then turned upon its side, as indicated in Fig. 2, and, after withdrawing the gate-pattern, is iilled with molten metal, as indicated in Fig. 3, and when hard the flask-cover is removed and the molded weights, along with the sprue filling the gateway, are readily removed, owing lto the tapering form of the flask. The weights are easily broken from the sprue at the reduced lower ends.
Each chill is formed in two sections, the same when combined being of the proper form to mold the ring of the cast weight. chill is split longitudinally, the split extending transversely through the web K, forming the eye proper of the Weight, so that the chills are readily removed after the weights are cast. The end of one of the web-sections K is provided with a pin adapted to extend in a depression in the other section, and by this means they are always brought to proper position when put together.
The top, sides, and bottom of the ask are perforated, so as to afford ready escapement for the gases arising during the molding operation.
, The mold is simple in construction and adapted for the very rapid manufacture of sash-Weights. l
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of a flask open at its upper end and having its sides diverging upward, the iiask adjacent its lower end being formed with a side opening, the elongated gate-pattern adapted to be placed in horizontal position through said side opening of the flask, and formed with a central enlargement for the purpose stated, said gate-pattern being formed with vertical openings or perforations, the mold-patterns having reduced ends which are adapted to take the openings or perforations of the gate-pattern, and thus be held in Vertical or standing position While the flask is rammed with sand, I[he sectional chills adapted to be inserted in the ends of the molds to form the eyes upon Jalle sash-Weights after the mold-patterns have been removed, and the removable cover for Jhe upper end of the flask, substantially as shown and Clesori bed 1 o In testimony whereof I afx my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
