Description
J. W. BOOSINGER.
Wheel-Cultivator.
Patented Sept. 4, 1866,
N. PETERS. PHOTO-LITHDGRAPHER wAsH NGTON UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE] J. W. BOOSINGER, OF MARINE, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN CULTIVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,668, dated September 4, 1866.
To all whom tt may concem:
Be it known that I, J. W. BoosINGER, of Marine, in the county of Madison and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cultivators; and I- do hereby declare that the following is a full and clear description thereof, reference being` had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. V
Figure 1 of the annexed drawings :is a plan of the improved cultivator. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a rear-end elevation. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan of the swivel-clevis used on the front ends of the plow-beams for the purpose of counecting the same with the frame-work of the vehicle. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the said clevis.
This invention relates, first, to the device p for attaching the plow-beams to the frame of the vehicle; secondly, to the combination and arrangement of a series of devices for giving the said plow-beams a lateral motion; thirdly, to the arrangement for regulating the width of the plows; and, fourthly, to the devices for raising the plows up out of the ground.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my cultivator, I will procecd to describe its construction and operation.
I use a frame, A, mounted on the axle B and Wheels O, similar in form and construction to many of the cultivators now in use. These parts are surmounted by the driverls seat S, as usual.
The plow-beams D are connected with the forward beam'of the frame A by means of the swivel-clevis DI D2, the details of which are clearly shown in Figs. 4 and 5. The two sides d and d' of the strap D2 are made of one solid piece, as shown in Fig. 5. The top piece, dz, is hinged to the piece d' at w, so it may be opened for the purpose of placing it upon the beam A, to which it may be secured by means of the bolt ds, which screws down into the threads of a screw cut in the piece d. This arrangement and construction of the parts admit of an easy adjustment of the width of the plows, as, by loosening` the bolt (P the strap Dz can be readily moved to either side, as may be required.
The clevis proper, D', consists of two straps,
(1.4 and e15, which are united in the hinge x', so that the clevis may receive a Vertical motion. The beam of the plow is to be placed between the straps (14 and ds, and a bolt or bolt-s, ds, pass through the whole of these pieces, so as to hold them firmly together. The hinge m' connects the clevis D with the swivel-piece dl, which is hinged to the strap D2 by means of the pin dB.
It will readily be seen that the plow-beams D have a Vertical motion around the pivot x' and a lateral motion around the pin da.
There is a longitudinal shaft, E, that has its bearings in the frame A. On the forward end of this shaft there is a small wheel, a, with a concave surface in its periphery. Attached to this wheel a are two straps or ropes, a' az, which are also fastened to the plow-beams D.
There is a foot-lever, as, attached to the back end of the shaft E in such a position that the driver, seated on the seat S, can readily place both his feet on the arms al az of the said lever, and, by depressing either one of them, will turn the shaft E in that direction, and the shaft, acting through the medium of the wheel a and ropes or straps a' az on the beams D D, Will give them as much or as little lateral motion as may be necessary to follow the sinuosities of the rows of plants being cultivated.
There are two or more metallic straps, F,
having slots f.in them, placed on top of the plow-beains D, to which they are secured by means of the set-screws f'. When the setscrews f' and the bolts e13 are loosened the plows may be set to any required distance apart, and then seeured in place by nierely tightening up these screws.
There is a roller, G, which finds its bearings in some part of the frame A or the supports of the seat S. The said roller is connected with the plow-beams D by means of the straps g, and it is provided with a lever, g', for the purpose of turning` it over. There is a hook, gz, on the frame A, under which the said lever may be placed when it is thro wn down. When the plows are down in the ground the lever g' will be thrown forward; but when it is necessary to raise the plows up out of the ground, the lever will be drawn back by the driver and placed under the hook 92. As the roller is turned over by means of the said lever, it with the clevis D',a1so the combination of the will aut upon the plow-beztms, through the mesaid beams With the device E a a' (L3, foI` the dium of the straps g, to raise or lower them. purposes and in the manner substantially as Havng desoribed my inventon, What I descrbed.
