CRlBB-COUNTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 575,402, dated January 19, 1897.
Application filed April 11, 1896. Serial No. 587,2 i0. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM, H. MARTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the National Military Home, in the county of Los Angeles and State of Oalifornia, have invented a new and useful Oribb-Oounting Device for Counting and Registering the Game of Cribbage, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to cribb-counters in which the game is counted by turning a knob in place of moving pegs, as in the usual method of counting the game; and the object of my improvement is to show each count with a countinghand and an indicator adding the several counts and increasing the number of points from sixty to seven hundred and twenty with a register, so that any number of points agreed upon may be played. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top View showing either side to have counted fifteen points and the counting-hands turned back to the starting-point preparatory to counting again; Fig. 2, a top view after the removal of the cover or face, one of the knobs, one counting-hand, one register-hand, and one of the wheel-covers exposing the works of that section; Fig. 3, a side View; Fig. 4, a side View, partly in section.
The dotted lines 1 2 represent the position occupied by the face; 3 4, that portion of the bottom cut away.
In Fig. 1, M represents the cover or face, having dials N N and O O and indicators P P and R R; E E, the knobs, with countinghands F F.
L L are register-hands; O C, the ratchetwheel covers, having painted indicators D D. The wheel-covers O O are flush on top with the face M and turn in the dials N N.
In the exposed section of Fig. 2, A is the ratchet, having a tooth B, that turns a spurwheel K. G, the dog, drives the ratchet A, and moves forward and back from II to II, stop-posts, using but one-half of the circle in A. 1', the spring-pawl, stops A from turning back and carries a hammer which strikes the gong J when A is turning forward. A has sixty ratchets, correspondin g in number with the number of points on the dials N N. In the wheel-covered section, 0 represents the ratchet-wheel cover, having a painted indicator D, and is secured to A with three small screws at equal distances near the edge E, the knob, with a counting-hand F; K, a spurwheel carrying a register-hand L.
Fig. 3 shows the counting-hands and registor-hands to clear the cover or face.
In Fig. 4 the dotted lines 1 2 represent the space occupied by the face M; 3 4, that portion of the bottom cut away; X, one of the knob shanks, the lower end turning in a socket U, arranged in the bottom of the .boX S TT, spur-wheel pins, the lower ends turning in sockets U, the same as X, the tip ends carrying register-hands L L. The pins turning in the face M, the knobs E E, the hands F F, and the dogs G G are secured to the knob-shanks X. In turning forward, E F G X carry with them A B O D. In turning the knob back A B O D stand still. when D has been once around, beginning at on the dialN of the face M, the clutch B of the ratchet A will turn the spur-Wheel K one notch, the register-hand L showing one game or sixty points on the dial 0.
In beginning the game hands and indicators must point central. The counting-hand F may be pointed to any number on the dial N from 1? to 30, always beginning with 1, the gong J answering the same.
IV hat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
The combination in a cribb-oounter of a double set of ratchet-wheels A each having a tooth B spur-wheels K carrying indicators L, actuated by said teeth, secured wheel-covers 0 having painted indicators D, knobs E for operating said covers, stems X carrying counting-indicators F, dogs G driving said ratchets A, pawls t' carrying hammers, gon gs J adapted to be struck by said hammers, all inclosed in a case having a cover M with dials thereon cooperating with indicators D, F and L all substantially as described.
I \VILLIAM II. MARTIN.
