SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 574,545, dated January 5, 1897. Application filed August 26, 1896. Serial No. 603,947. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, MULFoRn WADE LAN- SING, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lishas Kill, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Penholders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts wherever found throughout both views.

This invention relates to penholders; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class in which the penholder proper is connected with or formed on a springoperated rod mounted in a tubular sleeve, and by which the pen is adapted to be projected into an ink-bottle and to be withdrawn by the operation of the spring, in which operation the surplus ink will be shaken from the pen.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional plan View of myimproved penholder, and Fig. 2 a side view thereof.

In the practice of my invention I provide a pen-stock 5 of the usual form, and'with the end of which is connected a tubular sleeve 6, and said sleeve is provided in its opposite sides with a longitudinal slot 7 and at its outer end with an annular flange or rim 8, and mounted in said tube, at the outer end of said slots, is a cross plate or bar 9, and the end of the pen-stock is provided with a chamber 10, which is formed centrally thereof. Mounted in the cross plate or bar 9 and projecting into said chamber 10 is a rod 11, and said rod 11 is provided near its inn er end with a cross-bar 12, which projects through the slots 7 at each side, and formed on or secured to the ends of said cross-bar are disks or plates 13, and mounted on said rod 11, between the cross plate or bar 9, through which it passes,

and the cross-bar 12, is a spring let.

The outer end of the rod 11 is provided with any suitable or preferred form of penholder 15, into which a pen 16 may be inserted, and the operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following statement thereof.

\Vlienever it is desired to insert the pen into an ink-bottle, the flange 8 is placed on the neck thereof and the thumb and one finger on the disks or plates 13, and said rod 11 is forced outwardly or downwardly, and in this operation the pen is passed into the ink, and then by releasing the disks or plates 13 the spring 14 will throw said rod inwardly or backwa'rdly, and the cross-bar 12, striking the end of the pen-stock or the adjacent ends of the slots 7, will shake the surplus ink from the pen, and thus only the requisite amount of ink will remain on the pen and the danger of blotting the paper will be avoided.

In projecting the pen as described it is not absolutely necessary to place the flange 8 on the neck of the ink-bottle, and said flange 8 may be omitted if desired, and it is evident that changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invent-ion or sacrificing its advantages.

Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As a new article of manufacture a penholder consisting of a stock of any desirable form, and a sleeve secured thereto and provided on its opposite sides with longitudinal slots therein, an annular flange on the rim or the outer end thereof, a cross plate or bar mounted in said tube near the outer ends of said slots, the outer end of said pen-stock being provided with a chamber centrally formed therein, a rod mounted in said cross-plate and extend ing through said tube, a cross-bar secured to the inner end of said rod and projecting through said slots, disks or plates slightly concave on either end of said bar outside of said tube, a spring mounted on said rod between said cross-bars and cross-plate, a suitable penholder secured to the outer end of said rod adapted to engage the pen, all of said parts being combined substantially as and for the purposes set forth and described.
