WITNEIEIE EEI JJATTY' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IVILIiIAM-A. MAURAN, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
CARPET-LINING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 562,635, dated June 23, 1896.
Application filed June 25, 1896. Serial No. 554,043. (Na model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, 'WILLIAM A. MAURAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Carpet-Lining, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheaply-constructed carpet-linin g, having the desirable qualities of flexibility and elasticity, combined with great durability; and it consists in a loosely-woven carpet-lining, having a filling of crumpled untwisted paper, as here inafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan view of my improved can pet-lining. Fig. 2 represents an enlarged transverse section. Fig. 3 represents a strip of paper of which the filling is formed. Fig. e represents the strip of paper when crumpled preparatory to being woven into the fabric.
In the drawings, A A represent the warpthreads of the fabric, and B B the looselycrumpled filling, the said filling being formed of an untwisted strip of paper O, crumpled by being drawn longitudinally through a tubular guide, thus forming an elastic weft B, which will impart the desired qualities to the fabric. The edges of the fabric are protected by the selvage strips of paper D D, which are folded longitudinally, so as to embrace both sides of the fabric, and connected thereto by means of the row of stitches (t. The middle portion of the fabric is reinforced by means of the longitudinal strips 2) b and the accompanyin g rows of stitches c c, or if preferred the strips 12 b may be dispensed with, the rows of stitches c 0 serving to prevent the unraveling of the fabric at the ends when out.
The carpet-lining so produced presents a desirable appearance as an article of manufacture, in addition to its intrinsic qualities for the purpose designed.
I claim as my invention- 1. A woven carpet-lining, having the filling
