Description

PATENT Grauen...`
A. C. KASSON, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
COOKING APPARATUS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,232, dated July 10, 1866.`
To all whomit may concern:
Be it known that I, A. C. KAssoN, of Milwaukee, inthe county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Cooking Apparatus; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of an apparatus made according to my invention, the same being shown closed. Fig. 2 is an elevation thereof with the cover raised. Fig. 3 consists of several views of a coffee-roaster which can he operated by means of my improvement, one view showing an axial section of said roaster, another a periphercal view, anotheran end view, showing the opening through which access is had to its interior, and another showing the end closed. Fig. 4 is a top or plan view of the apparatus, its cover having been removed. Fig. 5 consists of a cross-section of' the revolving plate lI and also of a plan v iew. Fig. 6 is a front view of' the apparatus without the cover.
Similar letters of' reference indicate; like parts.
The object of this invention is to provide an apparatus by means of which many of the operations in cooking and treating articles of food and other articles Ymay be performed with less labor and care than are commonly required, and in a more perfect manner.
It consists, among other things, in abox having a hinged cover and a perforated false or supplementary bottom, which revolves on a central pivot and is kept in motion by clockwork connected to the box. The bottom of the box is made open, so that when it rests upon a stove or range over theboiler-holes the direct rays of the fire can pass into the box and act upon articles placed on its perforated revolving bottom. 'Ihe upper end of the hub of the revolving bottom is corrugated and drives a coffee-roasting apparatus hung inside of the box.
The letter A designates the box, having a portion, F, of its cover hinged, as shown in the drawings, so that access can be had to the interior. O11 the top of the permanent portion p The lower end of the post D of the clock is `grooved iu several directions, and the top of the shaft E has a tongue formed across it which engages with one or another of the grooves of the post, and the shaft consequently is turned whenthe clock-work is set running.
The perforated plate H forms a false bottom to the box, being set near to the real bottom, so as just to clearit in its revolutions, its diameter being also such that its circumference just clears the sides of the box. The bottom of the box has one or more openings through it corresponding to the boiler-holes of a stove or range; but I have only shown one such opening, G, in this example, which is made with a flange that extends downward so as to t within one of the boiler-holes of a stove.
The under side of the bottom of the box has The top of the box has a curved hook pivoted on it,"
also short legs, which keep it level.
which serves to hold the shaft E in a vertical position by embracing it at the place where it rises above the box.
When the plate H is to be removed from the box for any purpose the hook is swung back and the shaft can then be pulled out of the slot in the top of the box, wherein it is held when in operation.
Lis a bar which hangs down from the fixed part of the top or cover of the box near to the vertical shaft E, being secured in the under side of said top, alittle forward of' the shaft The lower end of this bar is formed with a hook which receives and acts as a bearing for one of thejourn'als O of a cylindrical coffeeroaster, I, whose other journal runs in a bear ing provided in the side of the box.
rlhe height of the hook of' the bar L `is regun lated by the distance to which the bar is screwed into the top of the box, and the bar can then be held steady and locked by means of a locking-pin, M, screwed into the same hole from above until it comes in contact with the top of the bar.
rlhat end of the ooftee-roaster which is nearest the shaft E has a ange raised on its periphery, and said iiange has teeth cuton it which come in contact with the roughened surface of the hub J of the revolving plate, the height of the hook of the bearing-bar L being adjusted so that the toothed flange will touch the top of the hub and so cause the rotation of the plate to revolve the roaster by frictional contact. The position of the coffeeroaster should be over 011e of the boiler-openings in the bottom of the box.
The plate H receives on it any article which is to be cooked, and the cover F being shut' down the clock-work is set in motion, when the plate will revolve Without interruption and at such speed as the clock-gearin gis constructed and arranged to produce until the spring or other motive power is spent, the cook being meanwhile relieved from that attention and labor which the modes of cooking in ordinary stoves and ranges now require.
When any article is being baked or broiled on the plate H the coffee-roaster is, ofcourse, removed, its removal being effected by merely lifting its journals oft' their bearings. rllhe plate H'has a raised flange around its edge, and its perforations may be of various sizes to Suit the judgment of the maker.
Instead of the coffee-master I any other cylindrical vessel which can be used in the oper ations of cooking may be placed in the box A and rotated as above explained.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A cooking apparatus com posed of a close box capable of being thrown open, as above shown, having openings inv its bottom which are provided with flanges that tit in the boilerholes of a stove or range, substantially as described.
2. The box A, made` substantially as described, with anged openin gs on its bottom and with a hinged cover at its top, in combination with-the perforated plate H, substantially as shown.
3. The combination ot' the box A, the perforated plate H, and the clock-Work, Which gives rotary motion to said plate, substantially as above described.
'4. The adjustable bearing-bar L, in combination with the roughened hub J of the revolving plate H, substantially as described, for the purpose of supporting and revolving a coffee-toaster or other cylindrical article.
