METHOD OFVHMAKING GUTTAfPERCHA CL\OTH.
vSPECIIFIGA'IIOBT forming part of Letters Patent N o. 562,281, 'dated J' 1111@ 16, 1896- Application filed April 2, 1896. Serial No. 585,931. (N0 specimens.)
To all whom zmay concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH S.,COYTE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Methodsoflllaking Gatta-Percha Cloth, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide' a new and improved method or process4 for manufacturing gutta-percha clth, whereby gutta-percha is thoroughly united or combined with a textile material.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of an apparatus suitable for carrying my invention into edect. Fig. 2 is a sectionalview of a portion of gutta-percha' cloth madeaccording to my invention, and
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same.
In the drawings the numeralsv 1 and 2 in-l dicate rollers. The roller 1 is heated by any suitable Well-known means, as by a steam-jet passed through the roller. The roller 2 is cold or unheated and is covered with a wrapping 3, such as musln, suitably kept moistas, for example,.by a jet or spray or by moistening with a sponge or in any suitable way.
A sheet 4 of gutta-pe'rcha being laid upon or against a foundation 5, `such as a piece of muslin or textile material, and the'sheetsf 5 being run through between the rollers, the gutta-percha 4 is thoroughly secured to the foundation or fabric 5. The fabric' is made4 to pass in contact with the hot roller 1, the gutta-percha contacting with the cold roller 2 or ratherV with the moist wrapping 3 of the cold roller.
The rollers 1 2 are set so close together or so held toward oneV another by spring-preslthe fabric and extends as an unbroken sheet sure or other means that the materials or sheets 4 5 in passing between the rollers will 4c be firmly pressed together. The combined heat'and pressure cause the gutta-percha to be press/ed into the meshes of the cloth or fabric 5, so that the gutta-percha is united to or facing over one side thereof. The portions 6 of the gutta-percha sheet which project into `the meshes of the fabric cause the gutta-percha to be held to the fabric.
The foundation or fabric 5 being interposed v5o between the hot roller 1 and the gutta-percha sheet prevents the latter adhering to the hot roller, while the cool or moistened wrapping 3 prevents the gutta-percha adhering to roller 2.
The complete cloth having the gatta-percha exposed along one face is serviceable for various purposes-as, for eXample,-in protecting leather enamel during working, as in making patent-leather shoes.
What I claim as new, and desire'to secure by Letters Patent, is
The method or process herein described of making gutta-percha cloth, which consists in superimposing sheets of cloth and guttapercha, pressing these sheets, and while under pressure subjecting the cloth and one face of the gutta-percha to heat, and concurrently therewith cooling the other face of the guttapercha, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set 7o my' hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
