CORSET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 561,202, dated June 2, 1896.
Application filed December 19, 1895. Serial No. 572,672. (No model.)
To aZZ whom) it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GIDEON A. CLOSE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corsets; and I do hereby declare the following tobe a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain improvements in corsets, but specifically refers to corsets that are especially adapted for use in instances where it becomes essential that the hip and diaphragm or abdominal muscles of the wearer should be free from pressure or restraint.
My improvement is particularly beneficial to singers, equestriennes, cyclists, and to those whose vocation renders it advisable that the working of the hip and diaphragm muscles should not be impeded orin any way interfered with.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective illustrating my improved corset as applied in use, and Fig. 2 a front perspective of the corset spread out.
Similar numbers of reference denote like parts in both figures of the drawings.
1 represents the hip-sections of the corset, which are cut away so asto terminate at or about the waist-line, and 2 the front or abdominal sections, which latter are cut away up to a point above the Waist-line of the corset, which point, when the corset is on the wearer, is immediately above the diaphragm region, so that it will be readily understood that the hip-muscles and such region as well as the abdomen are perfectly free from any pressure or restraint.
In Fig. 2 the waist-line of the corset is denoted by the dotted line across the corset.
I extend the front hip-sections so as to form depending flexible tabs 3, to which the stocking-supporters 4 are attached, as shown at Fig. 1, and this arrangement is quite advantageous, since there is less tug on the corset during the action of the limbs of the wearer, and the clasps or other devices may grasp the stocking at points on opposite sides of the knee without any torsion of the supporter. Furthermore, if shoulder-straps 5 are used it will be clear that these garment-supporters and straps will be in the same vertical plane.
My improved corset affords a complete support for the body down to the waist-line, with the exception of the cut-away front sections above referred to, and therefore is not to be confounded with girdles which latter give practically no support whatever. It will thus be seen that the hip portions of the corset terminate at their lower edges at or about the waist-line of the corset, while the abdominal portion is cut away up to a point above said waist-line, these hip and abdominal portions being separated by the flexible tabs which depend from the front hip-sections.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A corset, the lower edges of whose side hip portions terminate substantially at the Waistline, and whose abdominal portion is cut away up to a point above the waist-line, whereby the hips and abdomen of the wearer are unimpeded, the front hip-sections of said corset having depending flexible portions, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
