H. D. B; WILLIAMS. MUSICAL INSTRUMENT.
Patented 001;. 20
amil/7 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HUBBARD D. B. WILLIAMS, OF MANSFIELD, OHIO, ASSIGN OR OF ONE-HALF TO CHARLES H. SNYDER, OF SAME PLACE.
MUSICAL INSTRUMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 569,777, dated October 20, 1896.
Application filed November 6, 1895. Serial No. 568,093. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HUBBARD D. B. WIL- LIAMs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mansfield, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Musical Instruments; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in IQ the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention contemplates certain new and useful improvements in musical instruments, and relates more particularly to that class known as harmonicas.
' It has for its object the production of an instrument of this character which shall be simple in construction and by means of which different musical tones may be easily and effectively rendered.
The invention will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is aviewin perspective. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the mouthpiece. Figs. 4 and 5 are views of a slight modification.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a cylindrical body portion open at its forward end a and having a handle a formed on its rear closed end. Holes or openings a are formed in the periphery of this cylinder, in each of which openings are placed reeds a or other suitable sound-emitting devices, so arranged that a musical sound or tone will be given by one set when a current of air is blown into the body portion A and by the other set when air is withdrawn from said body portion.
B is the mouthpiece, having a forward open end I) and provided at its rear end with ashoulder or offset b, designed to rest against the edges of the open end a of the body porbody portion D with only one row of reeds d,
while the mouthpiece d is provided with but one opening d registering therewith.
In operation the performer blows in the mouthpiece and at the same time rotates or turns the body portion so that the desired note or reed is opposite the openings 0 in the mouthpiece, whereupon a musical sound will be emitted by the passage of air through said opening and against the reed, the performer continuing to play by turning the body portion so that the various notes desired to be played will in turn register with said openings C.
It will thus be seen that I have produced a simple and unique musical instrument which is at the same time cheap and durable.
I claim as my invention 1. In a musical instrument, a cylindrical body portion having a forward open end and a rear handled portion, one or more soundemitting devices in the periphery of said body portion, and a shouldered mouthpiece 8o fitting in the open end of said body portion andupon which the latter is adapted to be rotated, as set forth.
2. In a musical instrument, a cylindrical body portion having a forward open end and a rear handled portion, one or more soundemitting devices in the periphery of said body portion, and a shouldered mouthpiece fitting in the open end of said body portion and provided with holes or openings adapted to register with said sound-emitting devices, substantially as set forth.
3. In a musical instrument, a cylindrical body portion having a rear handled end and it forward open end, one or more sound-elnitsound-emitting devices, SL1bSti\1\ti;iii as set ting devices secured in the periphery of said forth. 10 body portion a shouldered mouthpiece hnv- In testimony whereof I ni'iix, my signature ing a reduced ey'lini'iricai extension fittingin in presence of two Witnesses.
5 the open end of said body portion and upon HUBBARD 1"). 13. W'I'I'JI'AAMS.
which said body portion is adapted to be ro- Witnesses: titted, said extension being provided with 13. S. LAWRENCE,
holes or openings adapted to register with said '1. F. BLACK.
