B. 1 NUTT, Decd.
J, N. NUTT, Administrator. WAFFLE IRON.
No. 569,227. Patented Oct. 13, 1 896.
A TTUHNEYJI 1: arms PETERS an. moYo-u'ruou wxswmmcm n c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JASPER N. NUTT, OF SIDNEY, OHIO, ADMINISTRATOR OF EDIVARD F. NUTT, DECEASED.
WAFFLE-IRON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 569,227, dated October 13, 1896. Application filed December 14, 1895. Serial No. 572,125. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that JASPER N. NUTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sidney, in the county of Shelby and State of Ohio, is the administrator of the estate of EDWARD F. NUTT, late a citizen of the United States, deceased, who invented certain new and useful Improvements in IVaffleJrons, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to waffle-irons, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and which is more convenient than similar devices of this class heretofore employed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved waffle-iron; Fig. 2, a central vertical longitudinal section thereof, and Fig. 3 a partial section of the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
In the practice of this invention a base-rin g or support A, which is of the usual form, is employed and provided with an annular rim at the top, within which are placed the separate jaws or frames B and D of the waffleiron proper, each of which is provided with a shank b and 61, respectively, with which is connected a handle 2) and d, respectively, and the shanks b and d rest in a notch or recess formed in the rim or flange at the top of the ring A, and opposite these shanks are projections or shoulders b and (P, which are preferably semicircular in cross-section, and which project into and through jaws a, formed on the ring A, and which are united at the outer end by cross-piece a. All these parts, however, are substantially of the usual construction and form no part of this invention, which is limited to the construction hereinafter described and which relates to the method of connecting the separate jaws b and d of the waffle-iron with the ring A.
The separate jaws b and (Z are pivotally connected by means of a tenon b and a corresponding mortise d one of said parts being formed on one of the jaws and the other in the other, and when connected in this manner it will be seen that the upper part D may be raised and turned backward on the pivotal connection, as on a hinge, and in this position it will be supported by the crosspiece a, by which the jaws a are connected.
It will thus be seen that there is no danger of the accidental separation of the parts in the operation of the device, and all that is necessary in putting in the material from which the waffles are made is to turn back the upper part or jaw D, and when the material is placed in position to again turn it down, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
It will also be observed that by reason of this construction the entire device may be lifted or handled by either one or both of the handles (1 or b, for the reason that when either or both of said handles and the jaws D and B are raised on or turned backward the shoulders or projections 61 and b thereon willstrike against the cross rod or bar a, which unites the jaws a, and the lower ends of the shoulders or projections d and b will also strike against the ring A, thus forming a lock-lever for either or both of the handles d and b and the connected jaws D and B, and thus the wattle-iron or the entire device may be lifted by either or both handles independent of the usual bail.
The device is also provided with a handle or bail E in the usual manner.
Having fully described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured byLetters Patent, is-
In a waffle-iron, the combination of the usual base-ring as A, provided at one side with the usual jaws as a, said jaws being united by a cross piece or bar as a, and the usual waffle-irons or jaws which are provided at one side with handles, and at the opposite side with projections or shoulders which are pivotally connected and adapted to be inserted between the jaws of the base-ring, whereby when the "EtfllG-ilODS or jaws are turned backward, they will strike against the cross-bar a, and will thus serve as a support for the device independently of the usual bail, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as the invention of the said EDWARD F. NUTT I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing Witnesses this 26th day of March, 10 1896.
JASPER N. NUTT, Administrator 0f the esfaie of Edward F.
