UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
TIMOTHY D. PRATT, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- IIALF TO WILLIAM E. BURROWS, OF SAME PLACE.
CURTAIN-ROD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 569,010, dated October 6, 189 6. Application filed March 18, 1896. Serial No. 583,661. (N0 i OdQl-l To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, TIMOTHY D. PRATT, of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Curtain-Rods; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming partof this specification.
The invention has reference to an improvement in extensible rods and their supportingposts used for the support of curtains and other similar articles.
The invention consists in the peculiar and novel construction, as will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and more particularly pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1 is a side view of the rod and its end supports. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side view, and Fig. 4 an end view, of the spring-clamp by which the ends of the rods are secured i the end posts.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
In the drawings, 5 5 indicate the end supports or posts. These posts may have the screw 6 secured to the post, so that it will turn with the post, or have the screw inserted through the opening 7, so that a screw-driver maybe used to secure the post. Each post is provided with an opening 8. The rods 10 and 11 consist, preferably, of two metal tubes, differing in diameter, so that the rod or tube 10 telescopes into the rod or tube 11, and thereby the tubular rods may be extended or contracted in length and are adapted for considerable variations in their combined length. Within one end of the tubular rods 10 and 11 are secured the spring-clamps 12 by solder or in any other suitable manner. The springclamps 12 consist of the base 13, the shank 14, and the head 15. The head and the shank are split by the slit 16, extending from the apex of the head 15 to near the base 13. The head 15, when it is forced into the opening 8 of the end post 5, which is of smaller diameter than the largest diameter of the head, will, by reason of the slit 16, contract and enter the opening, when it will expand and hold the end of the tubular rod in contact with the supporting-post, furnishing a firm support for the post.
The opening 8 in the end post 5 may be made rectangular or oval and the head 15 be made of corresponding section, so that when inserted the spring-clamp 12, and with it the tube in which it is secured, will be supported and held against rotation.
I do not wish to confine myself therefore to the exact construction of the spring-clamp support herein shown, as the form of the spring-clamps 12 may be varied without materially changing the operation of the same.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a curtain-rod, the combination with the end posts 5, the screws 6 and the telescopically-connected tubular rods 10 and 11, of the spring-clamps 12, each having the base 13 the shank 14 and the head 15 split longitudinally, whereby the rods are secured to the end posts, as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
TIMOTHY D. PRATT. IVitnesses:
