DEVICE FOR SCOURING ND POLISHING KNIVES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 566,944, dated September 1, 1896. Application filed May 29,1896. Serial No. 593,622. (No model.)

Be it known that I, JAMES STALKER, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Scouring and Polishing Knives 3 and I do hereby de clare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specication, and to the reference-letters marked thereon.

My present invention has for its object to provide an appliance adapted to facilitate the scouring and polishing of table-knives or similar utensils, which is simple and cheap in construction and admirably adapted for the purpose, and it consists in certain improvements and combinations of parts, all as will be hereinafter fully described and the novel features pointed out in the claim at the end of this specification.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a perspective view of a device constructed in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 a vertical sectional view through the handle carrying the pad.

Similar letters of reference in the two iigures indicate similar parts.

The base-board or frame of the appliance (indicated by A) is preferably constructed of wood and provided with an upwardly-extending flange or edge A and a central rib B, dividing the upper portion, preferably, into two parts. On one side of the central rib B is arranged a plate O,of glass or equivalent hard material, secured in position in any suitable manner, preferably by being set in plasterof-paris, and constituting a hard surface supporting the knives to be scoured or polished, which is unaffected by the scouring material, and therefore will not be worn into grooves or absorb water and collect d-irt. This plate C also serves as a means for protecting a label or advertisement which may be placed beneath it and which is visible through the body of the glass. D indicates a standard,

preferably a metal rod, the lower end of which is secured to the base in any suitable manner, as by a plate D', while the upper end is preferably curved over the glass plate C and is provided with an open hook at the end, in which is hooked the looped end of a guide-rod E, extending downward and entering a longitudinal recess formed in a wooden Vhandle F, having at its lower end a pad, cork,

or other appliance Gr for carrying the scouring and polishing material or powder. The

connection between the hook and the rod E is a loose one, so that the latter may move freely in any direction, and that between the rod and handle permits their relative longitudinal movement, so that when the knife is laid upon the support D the operator, grasping the handle, can swing it back and forth and slightly sidewise, if desired, so the scouring or polishing material upon the base may be moved lengthwise, and, if desired, sidewise, of the knife .to more thoroughly scour or polish the latter, and the arrangement of parts is such that the handle is not liable to be disconnected from the standard in operation or when at rest, but may be removed by swinging it upward. The rod E may also be disconnected from the standard by reason of the open-hook connection, if desired.

The pad Gis preferably formed of a piece of cork iitted to the recess in the lower end of the handle F, but as it is removable a pad of other suitable material may be readily substituted, if desired.

This device may be made at a nominal cost and will be found to be admirably adapt-ed for the purpose.

I claim as my invention-'- The combination with the base and the standard, of the handle and the pad thereon, the rod pivoted to the standard by a universal connection and telescoping with the handle, substantially as described.
