Patented Aug. 25, 1896.
W/TNESSES:
NITED STATES ATENT Fries'.
HENRY BEHRENS, OF HUN TINGBURG, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO THE INDIANA MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
PN EU MATIC STRAW-STACKER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 566,491, dated August 25, 1896. Application mea January 14,1896. saai No. 575,448. et@ man.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY BEHRENS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Huntingl burg, in the county of Dubois and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pneumatic Straw-Stackers, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention relates to that class of strawstacking apparatus commonly known as pneumatic straw-stackers, especially such as shown and described in Letters Patent of the United States No. 467,476, to J ames Buchanan, and No. 493,734, to Joseph W. Nethery; and it consists especially in certain improvements upon or attachments to the hood on the outer end of the discharging trunk or chute, whereby the direction of the straw is more effectually controlled than heretofore and said straw at will shielded from the wind on either side at the immediate point of delivery, all as will be hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof, and lon which similar letters and iigures of reference indicate similar parts, Figure l is a perspective view of a fragment of a threshing-machine provided with a pneumatic straw-stacker embodying my said invention; Fig. 2, a fragmentary rear end elevation of the upper end of the trunk or chute of such straw-stacker with my improvement attached, on an enlarged scale; and Fig. 3, a top or plan view of the same parts shown in Fig. 2.
As the threshing-machine and the greater portion of the straw-stacker are not of my present invention, and are or may be of any usual or desired construction, they will not be further described herein except incidentally in describing said invention.
The trunk or chute l has on its outer end the usual or any desired deflecting-hood 2, which serves the purpose fully set forth in the said Buchanan patent, No.467 ,47 6. I-Ieretofore, however, there has been no means whereby the discharge of straw could be varied sidewise without moving the entire structure of the delivery trunk or chute and no means whereby the straw could be pro` tected from the force of the wind from either side at the immediate point of delivery. As
before indicated, the purpose of my invention-is to supply this need, and I have theref ore provided a pivot rod or shaft A, which preferably is mounted upon and extends up from the hood 2, although it might obviously be mounted on the trunk or chute l, and upon this shaft, by means of suitable extensions and braces, as b b, I have secured the v shiftable deflecting plate or shield B. Cords 6o C and C are shown Vas a means of shifting this deiiecting plate or shield from one position to another, and are a preferable means for the purpose, although, of course, other means may be substituted without departing from my invention. The preferable form and arrangement of the several parts are illustrated in the drawings, but such details may, of course, be varied at pleasure.
Having thus fully described my said inven- 7o tion, what I claim as new, and desire to se- -cure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, with a pneumatic straw-stacker, of avertically-pivoted deflecting-plate secured upon the outer end of the delivery trunk or chute, and projecting beyond the discharging mouth or hood and means for adjusting the position of the same from side to side of the trunk or chute as required, substantially as and for the purposes 8o set forth.
2. The combination of the delivery trunk or chute of a pneumatic straw-stacker, a hood thereon, a vertical pivot-shaft upon said hood, and a deiieoting-plate mounted upon said pivot-shaft with means for shifting the same thereon, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination, in a pneumatic strawi stacker, of the delivery trunk or chute, a 9o hood thereon, and a vertically-pivoted defleeting-plate adapted to be adjusted from side to side of the adjusting end of the trunk or chute, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal, at Huntingburg, Indiana, this 10th day of January, A. D. 1896.
HENRY BEHRENS. Witnesses:
JosAPH Bmx, TrIoMAs R. FISHER.
