SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 566,392, dated August 25, 1896. Application filed February 25, 1896x Serial No. 580,717. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern/,-

Be it known that I, HANNAH FREUD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city, county, and State of NewYork, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Covers for Corsets, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of one of my novel corset-covers; Fig. 2, a front View of same applied to a corset; Fig. 3, a rear View of same applied to a corset; Fig. 4, a detailed view of my novel fastening; Fig. 5, a detailed view of such fastening, showing it applied to the corset-lacing. Fig. 6 is a detailed View showing my novel method of detachably retraining the cover upon the eye of a" clasp of the corset; Fig. 7, a detail showing my method of detachably securing the said covers to the knobs of the clasp of the corset.

The objects of my invention are to provide a novel article of clothing for the purpose of protecting the exterior of corsets from wearing and soiling and to improve the appearance of corsets, and to so shape, devise, and provide such novel garment with attachments as to insure its being applied and used with inappreciable change in the present conventional appearance and form of the corset and costume generally, and also to insure its being removed from and applied to the corset with ease and convenience and applied in such a manner as to fit snugly and without affecting the present external appearance of the dress or other overgarment. I attain these objects by means of the devices illustrated in the drawings.

A A represent the two parts of my cover. They are preferably made out of any lightweight material adapted to being laundered and are, in the usual well-known manner, so shaped and gored as to possess the usual contours of the external surface of a corset or corset-waist. I secure these covers detachably to the corset in the following way: That portion or edgeof the coverA which overlies that part of the corset carrying the eyes of corset-clasp a a a I provide with loops 7) 5, adapted to pass over and embrace the eye, as shown in Fig. 6. The front of the other half of my cover A, which overlies the complementary half of the corset O, I provide with buttonholes d 01, adapted to pass over and embrace the knobs c c of the corset-clasp.

The rears of the corset-covers are secured at their edges to the corset-lacings in the following manner: I provide the rear edges of the corset-cover, as shown in Fig. 3, with a button or other suitable knob e, secured to said edges by a prolonged flexible connection 12, and secured to the edge at or about the same point I also provide a loop on, through which passes the said button 6 and its fieXi ble connection n. The attachment is made to the lacing by carrying the flexible connection n on one side thereof, the loop m on the other side thereof, and buttoning the loop over the button.

The operation of my invention is as follows: The covers are applied by buttoning the holes of d upon the knobs e of the corsetclasp and on the other side of the front edge by passing the loops 1) I) over the eyes of the corset-clasps, as shown in Fig. 2. The rear edges are in turn secured by buttoning the loops m upon the buttons 6 and around such ones of the lacings as will insure the proper fit. To remove the cover at any time, the attachments and fastenings are loosened or unbuttoned." By providing the fronts of the covers with a positive fastening and the rear with a fastening thus adapted to adjustability in relation to the lacings I am enabled to drawinto correct and close position my coverings by the same operation which laces or adjusts the corsets, whereby the desired close and perfect fit is secured, notwithstanding trifling variations in the shape of the covers or the corsets. My method of fastening likewise obviates the use of unusual or unconventional devices for securing the covers in position, and also obviates the use of such devices as would be incommodious for or unadapted to the laundering of the covers. At the same time my fastenings enable the cover to be maintained strongly and firmly in the exact position required for use, and this without, as heretofore in cases of corset-coverings, relying upon the support of the shoulders or arms of the wearer, whereby the frequently objectionable sleeves heretofore supposed to be necessary are dispensed with.

Another advantage arising from the peculiar construction of cover and means of at- ICO taching and securing the same which I have invented is the applicability of the cover to varying makes of corset. As is well understood, the corsets of different manufacturers vary among themselves somewhat in the relative position of the clasps, the knobs and eyes of which are in some instances higher or lower than in others relatively to the other portions of the corset. By making my knob-holes (2 vertical instead of horizontal, as shown in Fig. 7, and by somewhat prolonging them, as compared with the length there shown, and by correspondingly prolonging my loops 1) b, I am enabled to adapt my corset-cover to be secured smoothly and effectively to the front of the aforesaid varieties of corsets, since when the holes and the loops are thus vertically prolonged they are held by knobs or eyes inserted into them at any point throughout their entire length.

The general advantages of such covers in the matters of preventing wear as well as soiling of the exterior of the corset will be too well appreciated to require further comment.

I am aware that buttons have been sewed to button-strips, so called, by independent tapes in order to secure their being readily handled to engage with the buttonholes of a garment, and I am aware that corset-covers have heretofore been made deriving their support and fit from arm straps or supports passing over the shoulders of the wearer or constructed in the shape of flat bags or slips,

into one of which each half of the corset is slipped or fitted, and that this latter style of corset-cover has been partially retained in position by passing through eyelets in its rear edges the usual corset lacing, and I claim none of these devices.

hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is the following, viz:

1. A two-part corset-cover, each part having fastenings on its front edges adapted to be attached to the fastenings of the corset, and a series of independent flexible fastenings on its rear edges, each fastening being formed of a plurality of parts, adapted to engage with one another and with the corset, substantially as set forth.

2. A corset-coverhavin g a backwardly-projecting flexible and adjustable rear fastening, consisting of a knob e,aflexible connection 41 and a loop m, substantially as and for the purpose described.

3. An external detachable and adjustable corset-cover consisting of the two complementary parts, A, A, provided at their opposing front edges with buttonholes d, d, and loops, 1), b, and at the rear with loops an, and with knobs, e, secured to flexible connections, at, substantially as and for the purposes described.
