UNTTnn STATES PATENT rricn.
REINHARD \VUELFING, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
CORE FOR PAPER-ROLLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 566,368, dated August 25, 1896.
Serial No. 581,488. (No model.)
To whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, REINHARD WUELFING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Centering Devices for Paper-Rolls, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a diagram view of my device as in use. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation thereof. Figs. 3 and 4 are respectively front and rear elevations. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of some of the parts detached, and Fig. 6 is a central longitudinal section.
My device comprises a tapering sleeve adapted to be secured to the shaft upon which the paper-roll is to be mounted, provided with taper jaws having screw-threaded shanks, sliding-1y secured in longitudinal ways formed in the sleeve, and an interiorly-screw-threaded collar, forming a means for adjusting said jaws simultaneously and correspondingly to center the roll. The preferable construction which I employ is as follows:
Ais the sleeve, bored to the size of the shaft on which it is to be mounted. This sleeve is provided with the tapering portion B, at the large end of which is formed the reduced cylindrical portion 0 and the further reduced screw-threaded cylindrical portion D, forming, respectively, the square shoulders E and F.
G is an interiorly-screw-threaded collar, adapted to fit over the portion 0. H is another collarinteriorly screw-threaded to engage with the screw-threaded portion D and abut against the shoulder F, its inner face forming a shoulder G, between which and the shoulder E the collar G is screwed, so as to be held from longitudinal movement, but free to turn upon the cylinder 0.
I are longitudinal grooves or ways formed in the sleeve, preferably three in number, and
located at equidistant points around the pe'= riphery. These grooves extend the entire length of the sleeve, being of a depth to fall within the periphery of the portion D and also that of the small end of the portion B.
J are jaws longitudinally slidinglysecured in the ways I, each having the taper portions 1), the screwthreaded portion 0, and the shanks cl, corresponding, respectively, to the portions B, C, and D of the sleeve, and the portion 0 being adapted to engage with the screw-threaded collar G.
a are wrench-holds formed in the collar G. K is a set-screw for securing the sleeve to the shaft, which passes througha screw-threaded aperture formed in the collar H and portion D and thus also forms a securing-pin, preventing the unscrewing of said collar.
The parts being thus constructed, the paper-roll, which is provided with a tubular core, is slipped onto the shaft M, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, one end engaging with cone N upon said shaft. The sleeve A is then placed upon the shaft at the other end of the tubular core and secured by the setscrew K, after which the collar G may be turned to adjust the jaws J longitudinally, thereby securing and centering the roll.
hat I claim as my invention is- 1. The combination with a sleeve having externally a tapering portion, a reduced cylindrical portion adjacent to the large end thereof and longitudinal grooves or ways, of an interiorly-screw-threaded collar rotatorially adj ustably secured upon said cylindrical portion, and jaws slidingly secured in said ways having tapered portions and screwthreaded portions, the latter adapted to e11- gage with said screw-threaded collar and to be correspondingly adjusted thereby longitudinally.
2. The combination with a sleeve having exteriorly a tapering portion, a reduced cylindrical portion adjacent to the large end thereof and longitudinal grooves or ways, of an interiorly-screw-threaded collar, loosely sleeved upon said cylindrical portion, a collar secured on said sleeve adapted to hold the aforesaid loose collar from longitudinal movement, and jaws slidingly secured in said ways having tapered portions, and screw-threaded portions, the latter adapted to engage with the interior screw-thread of said loose collar, and to be correspondingly adjusted thereby longitudinally.
3. The combination with the sleeve A, having the tapered portion B, the reduced cylindrical portion 0, the further reduced cylindrical portion D, and the longitudinal grooves or ways I, of the interiorly-screw-threaded .collar G sleeved upon the portion 0, the collar H fixedly secured upon the portion D, and the jaws J slidingly secured in said ways, having tapered portions 17 and screw-threaded portions 0 the latter adapted to engage with the interiorly-screW-threaded collar and to be correspondingly adjusted thereby longitudinally.
4. The combination with the sleeve A having the tapered portion B, the reduced cylindrical portion 0, the further reduced screwthreaded cylindrical portion D and the 1011- gitudinal slots or ways I, of the interiorly screw-threaded collar G sleeved upon the portion C, the collar H screwed upon the portion D, the set-screw K passing through said collar H and portion D, the jaws J slidingly secured in said ways having the tapered portion 17 the shanks cl the screw-threaded portion 0, the latter adapted to engage with the collar 0 and to be correspondingly adjusted thereby longitudinally.
5. The combination with a sleeve having a tapering portion, a cylindrical portion adjacent to the large end thereof and longitudinal grooves or ways, of a screw-threaded collar rotatorially adjustably secured upon said cylindrical portion, and jaws slidingly secured in said ways having tapered portions and screw-threaded portions, the latter portions adapted to engage with said screw-threaded collar, and to be correspondingly adjusted thereby longitudinally.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
