IMPROVED HAM E-FASTENER.

Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,621, dated July 24, 1866.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, M. R. SHALTERS, of Alliance, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Llame-Fasteners; and I here by declare that the following is a full and complete description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, makin g a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a view of the fastener detached. Fig. 2 is a View of the same connected. Fig. 3 is an under-side View. Fig. 4 is a side view.

Like letters refer to like parts in the several Views. f'

The fastener consists of three pieces. A represents the hook; B, the loop, and G the bail.

D is a pin by which the hook is pivoted to the arms or forks a a of the bail C.

The hook A passes through a slot in the loop, and is brought around by the thumb-piece F to the position shown in Fig. 9.

The nger b of the loop clasps over the pin D, and is kept in its place by the line of strain, which falls directly through the center of the pin.

When desired to be detached, the thumbpiece F is brought round into the position as shown in Fig. 1, the lip c of the hook raising the finger I) oft the pin, so that the clasp is unfastened.

d and d are slots through which the hook can be passed when desired to lessen the length of the clasp or to draw the haines closer together.

The hooks E and E are designed to hook into the hame.

G is an auxiliary hook, which may be used when it is desired to lengthen the clasp.

There may be several slots in the loop B, by means of which the hame can be made to fit a large or small collar, and thereby adapted to various-sized horses.

What I claim as my improvement, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The loop B, provided with lips and slots, and the hook A, pivoted to the arms a a, arranged and operating conjointly as and for the purpose substantially set forth.

` 2. Hook A, nger c, and thumb-piece F, in combination with the pin D, arms a a, and loop B, arranged as and for the purpose set forth.
