Description

UNITED STATES PATENT Erice..
IMPROVEMENT lN FLOURBPACKERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,605, dated July 24, 1866.
To all 'whom it 'may concern:
Beit known that l, OSCAR PLACE, of Brooklyn, Kings county, State of New York, have invented a new and useful Iniprovement in Adj ustin g-Measure and Filling-Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication, in which- Figure l is a side view of my improved machine, parts being broken away to show the construction. Fig. 2 is a detail view of a portion of one end of the machine.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish a machine for filling uniformly papers or pack` ages of farina and similar substances that will not clog in flowing through small apertures; and it consists, rst, in the combination of a series of adjustable measuringtubes with the perforated plates; seco'nd, in the combination of the sliding perforated plates with the stationary perforated plates; third. in the combination of the lever and its adjustable support with the sliding perforated plates and with the frame of the machine; fourth, in the combination of the movable platform and lever for operating it with each other and with the frame of the machine, the various parts being constructed and arranged as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the platform upon which the machine stands. To each corner of this platform is attached a post. B. C is a platform sliding up and down between these four posts as guides. This platform is supported at its center upon a short arm, D, to the lower end of which is pivoted the end of the lever E. The lever E,
has its fulcrum in a support, F, attached to the said platform A, and by it the platform O is raised and lowered as desired1 At a sufficient distance above the platform C to allow the box to contain the packages to be conveniently putin and taken out there is attached a frame, G, the lsides of which are so attached to the end pieces and to the posts B that they can be readily removed when necessary. In horizontal grooves in the centra-l part of this frame are inserted two horizontal perforated plates, H and-l, a narrow space being left between them. The holes in the lower plate, H, are made a little larger than those in the upper plate, l, so that Whatever passes through the holes in the upper plate will readily fall or pass through the lower ones.
To the under side of the plate H, around each of the holes through said plate, are attached funnels J, to guide the fa-rina into the packages.
To each of the holes in the upper plate, I, is attached the lower end of the lower part of a measuring-tube, K.
L is a deep box or frame, the sides of which are attached to the end pieces in such a way that they can be readily removed when desired.
M and N are perforated plates set in grooves in the lower part of the frame or box L, said plates being constructed and arranged in the same manner as the plates H and I, hereinbefore described.
To the under side of the lower plate, M, are attached the upper ends ofthe upper parts of the measuring-tubes K. The upper parts of these tubes fit into the lower parts in the same manner as the sections of a telescope-case shut together,'as shown in Fig. l, so that by raising the upper parts of the measuring-tubes K their capacity will be increased.
The box or frame L slides freely up and down upon the posts B, and is supported at any desired height by the set-screws O. The upper part of the box L serves asa hopper to receive the farina and transmit it to the meas' uring-tubes K.
P is a box resting upon the top of the box or frame L, as shown in the drawings. The farina is first poured into the box P, and ows thence into the upper part of the box L through holes formed in the bottom of said box P along its sides and edges, the object being to introduce the farina equally through all parts of the box L, so that there may be no greater pressure upon one part than upon another.
Into the narrow spaces between the plates M and N, and between the plates H and I, are fitted the perforated sliding plates R and S, the holes through which are a little larger than the holes through the pla-tes N and l and a little smaller than the holes through the plates M and H, as shown. The slides R and S are enough shorter than the other plates to allow them to slide far enough to cover and uncover the holes through the plates M and H. The central parts of the ends of the slides R and S are extended into arms r' and s', which pass out through the ends-of the frames L and G, and to the ends of which is pivoted the lever T, as shown in the drawings.. This lever T has its fulcruin in the support U, which is adjustably attached to the posts B by screws passing through slots in said support U, as shown in Fig. 2.
The machine being in the position represented in Fig. l, the farina flows into and fills the measuring-tubes K; then by pushing in the lower end of the lever T the holes through the plates M N are closed, and those through the plates H I are opened, allowing the farina to escape through the funnels J into the packages prepared for its reception. These packages are arranged in the box in which they are set to be filled. The box is then placed upon the platform C, and by depressing the end of the lever E it is raised, bringing the mouth of each package over the lower end of the funnels vJ, so as to receive the farina as it flows from the measuring-tubes K. As many measuring-tubes should be placed in the machine as it is intended to have packages in each box, so that the whole box may be filled at one operation.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent- The arrangement of the perforated sliding plates R S, provided with lever T, having adjustable bearin'g U, perforated'plates M N H I, in combination with the sliding tubes K, applied with the removable frame G and sliding frame L, operating in the manner substantially as described, and for the purpose set.
forth.
