Description

J. E. SMOOT.
(No Model.)
PENHOLDER.
Patented Aug. 11, 1896.
NITED STATES PATENT rricE.
JAMES EDWARD SMOOT, OF CONCORD, NORTH CAROLINA.
PENHOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 565,806, dated August 11, 1896.
Application filed May 2'7, 1896. Serial No. 593,286. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, J AMES EDWARD SMoor, a citizen of the United States, residing at 0011- cord, in the county of Oabarrus and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Penholder, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to penholders; and it has for its object to provide simple and etficient means for ejecting a pen from the holder, when it is desired to remove the same, without the necessity of handling such pen, thereby preventing the soiling of the hands caused by grasping the rusted 0r inked nib.
To this end the invention consists substantially in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as will be fully illustrated, described, and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a penholder constructed in accordance with the present invention and showing a pen applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View thereof. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the same. Fig. dis a detail perspective View of the pensupporting plate. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the ejecting-pin.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the figures.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the barrel of a penholder, which may be of any desired shape, and is provided at one of its sides with an elongated slot 2, through which passes the hereinafter-described means for ejecting a pen.
Disposed within the barrel 1 is a spring concave-convex supporting-plate 3, having an extension-arm 4, the end of which is secured to the inner side of said barrel by means of a rivet 5 or its equivalent, and said plate is adapted to bind a pen against the inner side of the barrel 1 to hold the same therein. The plate 3 passes over and rests upon a transverse bar 6, arranged at about the middle of the barrel 1, and said plate is provided with an elongated slot 7, similar to the slot 2, the inner end of said slot 7 being enlarged to form aneye 8.
For removing a pen from the holder a sliding ejecting-pin 9 is employed. This pin has each of its ends provided with heads, 10, and intermediate said heads an annular shoulder 11 is formed. The shank of the pin 9 lies within the slot 7, and the lower head 10 thereof prevents the same being removed from said slot, the shoulder 11 bearing upon the upper side of the supporting-plate 3 and the upper head 10 projecting through the slot 2, so as to be easily operated when it is desired to eject the pen.
From the foregoing the advantages of the herein-described penholder will be readily understood by those skilled in the art. The pin 9 is passed through the eye 8 of the slot 7 and assumes the position above described before the supporting-plate 3 is secured within the barrel 1. 7 When, however, the arm 4 is attached to the inner side of said barrel, the slot 7 registers with the slot 2, but the eye 8 of the slot 7 lies within the barrel 1 beyond the adjacent end of the slot 2, and thereby prevents the pin 9 being removed from said eye.
To eject a pen Irom the holder, pressure is applied to the upper head 10 of the pin 9, which forces the shoulder 11 upon the upper side of the supporting-plate 3, and by reason of said plate 3 resting upon the transverse bar 6 it will be seen that the latter serves as a fulcrum'for the plate. 11 is pressed upon the supporting-plate the same is forced from the inner side of the barrel 1 and the pen thereon loosened, and by sliding the pin 9 along the slots 2 and 7 such pen is ejected from the holder in a simple and easy manner. -It will therefore be seen that the necessity for grasping a rusted or inked pen, when it is desired to remove the same from the holder, will be entirely overcome by the use of my invention, and a new one quickly replaced.
My improved holder may be formed of any desired material, and from the fact that the same is simple in construction it is apparent that the manufacture thereof will be inexpensive, and it will also be seen that breakage of the staff, which frequently occurs when removing the pens, is prevented.
WVhile the pin 9 is illustrated as round, it will be understood that the ejecting portion thereof, which slides in the slot of the supportingplate, may be fiat, ejecting edgewise; and it will be further evident that the upper head 10 may be concaved, so as to fit upon the barrel 1.
As the shoulder Having thus-described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desiredtolbe secured by Letters Patent, is
1. A holder of the class described, comprising a barrel, a spring-supporting plate secured within said barrel and adapted to bind-a pen,
against the inner side thereof, and means for forcing said plate from the inner side of the barrel and ejecting the pen therefrom, sub-' stantially as set forth.
2. A holder of the class described, comprising a barrel provided with an elongated'slot in one of its sides, a supportingplate secured within said barrel and provided with an elongated slot registering with the slot in the barrel, said supporting-plate being adapted to bind-a'pen-a'gainst the innerside 0f the barre], and a pin disposed in said'slots and adapt ed to force" the supporting-plate from the inne'rside of' the barrel and eject the pen theref rom; substantially as set forth.
Aholder of the class cleseribe'd,comprisin'g a barrel provided with an elongated slot in one of its sides, a supporting-plate secured within said barrel and provided with an elongated slot registering with the slot in the barrel, said supporting-plate being adapted to bind a pen against the inner side of the barrel, a bar arranged transversely within said barrel and forming a fulcrum for the supporting-plate, and a sliding pin disposed in said slots and adapted to force the supportingplate fromthe inner side of'thebarrel and ejectthe pen therefrom, substantially as set
