R. H. GOWAN.. SAW ATTACHMENT.
No. 564,192.- Patented July 21, 1896.
WITNESSES INVENTOR .dttorney UNITED STATES I PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD H. GOVVAN, OF CORSIOANA, TEXAS.
SAW ATTACH M ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 564,192, dated July 21, 1896. Application filed November 80,1895. Serialto. 570,682. (Nomodet) To aZZ whom it concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD H. GOWAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Corsicana, in the county of Navarro and State of Texas, have invented certain new and use= ful Improvements in Saw Attachments; and I do declare the following to be'a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a side View of device applied to saw. Fig. 2 is a view upon opposite side. Fig. 3 is a section on line a: 00, Fig. 1. Fig. A is a detail View of brace.
This invention is designed to provide a simple, convenient, and effective gage attachment for handsaws, whereby the depth of cut is regulated as may be desired without the necessity for constant measuring; and the invention consists in the novel con struction and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the blade of an ordinary handsaw to which I have shown. the invention as applied.
B designates my improved gage, which consists of a bar of steel, brass, or other suitable material, Which is split longitudinally for the greater part of its length by a narrow slot 1), which enters the lower end of the bar. The limbs or members formed by this slot possess naturally more or less spring or elasticity, whereby the gage may be clamped rigidly upon the saw-blade. One of these limbs or members is usually somewhat thicker than the other, and formed in the thicker member in its outer face is a longitudinal groove or way G, which extends from apoint near the lower end of the member to the upper end of the same.
Formed in the bottom of the groove or Way is a narrow longitudinal slot 0, which communicates with the slot 19. Fitted to slide in the said groove or way is a nut D, which carries a set-screw E, which extends into the slot 0. The lower end of each limb or member has secured thereto or formed integrally therewith a narrow extended foot-piece F, which is in a plane parallel with the longitudinal plane of the saw-blade. Each of these foot-pieces has a central horizontal portion f, which forms a stop for the saw when it has cut to the predetermined depth, and upwardly-inclined end portions f, which permit the saw to be inclined, or which form stops for the saw when cutting at an angle.
H designates a brace-link, one end of which is loosely secured to a set-screw h, which engages the lower portion of the thinner of the two members, the other end of the said link being loosely connected to the handle at h. k is a set-screw at the lower portion of the thicker member.
It will be observed that the gage may be set to cut to any desired depth up to very nearly the full width of the blade.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The herein-described gage attachment for saws, consisting of the bar having a narrow slot therein which divides it for the greater portion of its length into two members of spring character, each of said members having an extended foot portion formed with a central horizontal part and with upwardl inclined end parts, clampingdevices for securing the bar to a saw, and a brace-link connecting the lower portion of one of the members with the handle, substantially as specified.
In testimonywhereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
W. H. WHITE, J. N. CLIFTON.
