SPRING AIR-GUN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 553,716, dated anuary 28, 1896.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM F. MARKHAM,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Plymouth, in the county of Vayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring Air-Guns, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention consists in the construction of a spring air-gun, and particularly in the construction of what is known as a breakdown gunthat is, one in which the spring is compressed by opening a hinge-joint be tween the barrel and stock or breaking down the stock upon said hinge-joint.
The invention in particular consists in the construction of the connecting parts on the barrel and stock, whereby the construction is simplified and cheapened and made more efficient than constructions heretofore in use, all as more fully hereinafter described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the butt of the barrel and front of the stock, showing the parts in breakdown! position. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on line a: 0c, the parts being in closed position. Fig. 3 is a detached perspective View of the lockingplates at the front of the stock. Fig. at is a detached perspective view of one section of the combined forearm, trigger-guard and pivotarm.
A is an air-gun barrel, in which is the usual spring-actuated piston (not shown) for compressing the air behind the projectile. At the rear end is secured a combined fore-arm, trigger-guard and pivot-arm, which is of the following construction: Sheet-metal plates are struck into the shape shown in Fig.4, and two of these plates are riveted together, forming the trough-shaped fore-arm B, trigger-guard O and pivot-arm D. E is the trigger, pivoted on the cross-screw F and projecting below the forearm into the triggerguard.
G is the gun-stock, at the forward end of which are secured the plates H, secured at their rear edges to the stock, projecting beyond the stock and having at their forward edges the inwardly-extending flanges I.
These flanges near the top are preferably flared out, as shown at a, to form spring-jaws. The end of the arm D projects between these flanges I and is pivoted in the side pieces H by the bolt or screw J. On the sides of the arm D are locking-lugs, preferably formed by striking out portions of the metal thereof, these lugs having the long inclined rear face Z) and the locking-shoulder or sharply-inclined front face 0, as plainly shown in Fig. 2.
M is the connecting-rod from the stock to the spring-actuated piston, by means of which in breaking down the gun, as shown in Fig. 1, the spring is compressed, the piston engaging with the detent 011 the trigger, these parts not being shown in detail, as they are a wellknown construction.
hen thus constructed, in order to compress the spring the operator breaks down the stock, as shown in Fig. 1, drawing back the piston and engaging with the trigger-detent, as described. The parts are then turned to their normal position about the pivot J, and in this return movement the flanges a strike the long inclined faces 1), opening the spring-jaws until they reach the sharply-inclined locking-shoulder 0, over which they spring and lock the parts together.
The plates H, I preferably form of a single piece of sheet metal bent into the shape shown in Fig. 3, extending over the top of the stock and down on the sides thereof. The arm D, I preferably reinforce by means of a fillingblock M, as shown in Fig. 2, to get the desired strength when made of sheet metal.
hat I claim as my invention is- In a breakdown gun, a combined forearm, trigger-guard and pivot-arm comprising two metal pieces formed substantially as described, a filling-block for the pivot-arm, and means for securing the metal pieces together.
2. In a breakdown gun, the combination of the barrel, the stock, a rearward extension on the barrel formed of two separate metal pieces, forwardly-extending separated plates on the stock between which the extension on the barrel is pivoted, locking-lugs on the extension struck up from the metal of the component pieces, and flanges on said plates adapted to engage the lugs, substantially as described.

In abreakdown air-gun, the combination of the stock, the barrel, a rearward downward extension on the barrel, forwardly-extending separated plates on the stool: betweenwhich the end of the extension or arm on the barrel extends and is pivoted, the flanges I onsaid plates, having the inclined portion a and the locking-lugs on the arm on the barrel, having the long inclined portion 7) and the locking-shoulder e substantially as described. 10
