Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.,
PETER MURRAY, OF MILWAUKEE, WISGONSIN.
IMPROVED CABLE-STOPPER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 55,343, dated June 5, 1866.
1'0 alt .whom it may concem:
Be it known that I, PETER MURRAY, of the city and county of Milwaukee, in the State of Wisconsin, have made new and useful Improvements in Oable-Stoppers and I do hereby declare the following-to be a full, clear, and exact description of the nature, construction, and operation of the same, snflicient to enable one skilled in the art to which it is allied to construct and use the same, reference being` had to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1. is a top view. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a section on the line a b, Fig. 1. Fig. 4is a section on theline c d, Figs. 1 and 2.
The invention consists of a cable stopper or .clutch, for the purpose of holding a line, rope,
cable, or hawser over the side railing or bulwarks of a ship, (lock, or whart', for the purpose of sat'ely, expeditiously, and effectually arresting its mot-ion.
The ordinary position of the clutch will be upon the rail A ot' a ship, over which the rope B runs or is paid out.
The device consists of sliding jaws O O' and a stationary center pin, D, the rope B being pressed against the pin D by the pressure of the slidingjaws O O', which are caused to approach each other by means of the engagement of the pins E with the oblique slots F in the wheel G, which is revolved by the lever H and retained at a given point by the pawl and ratchet I J.
The rope may be Wrapped around the center pin, D, or pressed against one side of it only. In the latter case, by making one jaw permanent and the othermovable, a center pin may be dispensed with and the projecting face ot' one jaw be caused to pinch the rope against a corresponding depression in the other.
K is a bracket holding the inner end of the rotating shaft. The jaws slide in dovetail rabbets on the rail of the ship or`ot-her structure to which they are attached.
Thep'in upon the lower end or ends ot' the projections from the jaws may be en gagedby any cam or eccentric which will have the effect ot' moving it or them toward the stationary device against which the rope is to be clamped, or two connecting-rods united by wrists to the jaws and wheel may have a similar effect.
The required pressure is brought to bear by I means of the lever H.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the movable jaws orjaw C O' with the stationary pin or jaw D, eccentrically-slotted wheel G, and lever H, all constructed and arranged to operate snbst-antially as and for the purpose herein described;
PETER MURRAY.
