SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 553,374, dated January 21, 1896.

Michigan, have invented certain new and' adapted for bottle and lamp-chimney cleaning purposes by mounting it pivotally on a handle I, as shown in Fig. 6; but it also serves as a useful foundation-brush for making a variety of other brushes for kindred purposes useful improvements 1n Brushes, or which the following is a specification,reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

The invention relates to the manufacture of brushes adapted for the various purposes of cleaning bottles, lamp-chimneys, &c. and the invention consists in the novel construction of the brush and mode of making the same.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my completed brush. Figs. 2, 2 and 2 are perspective views of the parts forming the brushhead. Fig. 3 illustrates in perspective View the first step in the manufacture of the brush. Figs. 4 and 5 are cross-sections of the brush at different stages of its manufacture. Fig. 6 is a perspective view illustrating the application of my brush for bottle-cleaning. Fig. 7 is a perspective View illustrating the application of my brush for other purposes.

In making my brush I use a metallic brushhead, as A, formed of sheet metal bent into the form of a gutter and provided along its edges with notches B, all as shown in Fig. 2. In addition I use a piece of wire 0, formed with or without the hooks D at the ends. Bunches of bristles E being laid into the notches of the head, as shown in Fig. 3, and like bunches into the hooks D of the wire 0, the wire 0 is then pressed into the head to hold the bristles down, as shown in crosssection in Fig. 4, and then the flaps F which separate the notches are bent down upon the wire, as shown in cross section in Fig. 5. The finished brush has then the appearance shown in Fig. 1, and it is obvious that the longitudinal row of bristles G may be more or less outwardly inclined, and one or both of the bristles H may be dispensed with.

A brush of this character is strong and can be cheaply manufactured. It is especially 1n which a radial arrangement of the bristles is desirableas,for instance, in making round brushes, as shown in Fig. 7, in which a num ber of brushes are secured in grooves to a common head J.

It is obvious that-minor changes may be made in the different parts of the brush without in the least departing from the scope of my invention.

What I claim as my invention is- 1. In a brush, the combination of the head, flaps thereon, bristles between the flaps, and a wire within said head on the bristles, said wire and bristles being held in place by bending down the said flaps, substantially as described.

2. In a brush, the combination of the metallic head bent insubstantially tube shape with overlapping edges, having separated notches therein registering and forming openings, bent bristles in said openings, their ends projecting outwardly through the same, and a wire between the said overlapping edges and the bends of the bristles, for holding the latter in place, substantially as described.

3. In a brush, the combination of the head A formed of sheet metal, with notches B and flaps F, the wire 0 provided with a hook or hooks D adapted to hold a bunch of bristles as H, and the longitudinal rows of bristles G, formed by laying bunches of bristles into the notches of the head and securing the wire 0 in the head by bending over the flaps F, all substantially as described.
