Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LUELLA s. rrcKErT, or NEVADA, IowA.
ATTACHMENT FOR CHAIRS.'
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 553,359, dated January 21, 1896.
Application led July l2, 1895. Serial No. 555,73@ (No model.)
T0 all whom it may concern,.- Y
Be it known that I, LUELLA S. PIGKETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nevada, in the county of Story and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in I-Iolders or Bracket Attachments for Chairs, Seats, &c.; and Ido declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specication.
My invention consists of a holder or bracket attachment for seats, chairs, &c., adapted to hold books or parcels, umbrellas, dac. as hereinafter described.
Figure l represents a perspective view of an attachment embodying my invention secured to the back of a chair. Fig. 2 represents a side view, on a larger scale, of the lower portion of the umbrella-holder.
Similar letters represent like parts in both the figures.
In the drawings, A designates a holder or bracket formed of wire or other suitable material. On the side wires B of the back thereof, and integral therewith, are formed the eyes C," through which fastening screws or nails may be inserted for securing the attachment to the back of a chair or seat. On one side of the top D of the frame of the holder is a loop E, in which an umbrella can be inserted and held in place.
T he bottom F of the holder has the cross slats or bars G, and depending from two of them are the hat-hooks H, which preferably are a continuation of said bars. The ends J of said hooks are rounded, forming knobs, thereby avoiding injury to the hat by any sharp points of the wire, and the said hooks are connected or braced by a cross-wire K. The front of the frame of the holder is provided with stays or brace-wires L partially closing the same, and the ends and back are preferably open, thereby saving material and providing a light article for convenience in handling. The said front is of the same height as the back of the holder, and the distance between said front and back at the top is greater than at the bottom thereof, the
front being preferably at an incline to the` base, while the back is vertical thereto.
To hold the lower end of the umbrella, which is to be inserted in the loop E, in place, a socket M is employed, said socket being adjustably held in place by means of a rod N, which has a loop-headP and a screw-threaded point, the latter for insertion in the leg or other attachment of the chair or seat.
It will be seen that the holder described, while providing for books, parcels, umbrellas andhats, is both light in weight and can be manufactured at a small expense, and is readily put in place or removed.
Having thus described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is A holder or bracket attachment for a chair, consisting of a wire frame having an open back and a partially closed front, the latter having brace rods thereon, a base with cross rods, two of which have depending portions forming central hooks, said back having eyes integral therewith and one of the ends of the frame having on its upper wire a loop, said central depending hooks having a brace rod connecting them, and the top of the body of the holder being of agreater distance from the back to the front than at the bottom thereof, said parts being combined substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LUELLA S. PICKETT. Witnesses:
C. B. HOSTETTER, E. J. H. SANBORNE.
