Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LAMP-CHIMNEY CLEANER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 55,291, dated J une 5, 1866.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EZRA T. HAZELTINE, of Warren, in the county of Warren, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved LampChimney Cleaner; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being` had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention has for its object a ready and convenientinstrument by which the interior surface of lamp chimneys may be cleaned by the friction of a piece. of intervening paper, cloth, or other suitable material, which, by presenting a broad surface in contact with the glass while rubbing, cleans rapidly, and by substituting a fresh piece when soiled cleans more perfectly.
As ordinarily cleaned by means of a brush, it is obvious that much time and labor are necessarily consumed in order to bring the individual bristles in contact with every portion y y of the surface, and that the brush must be frequently washed in order to free it from the lamp-black which adheres to it.
My invention obviates these difficulties in the following manner: A is a piece of indiarubber or other material possessing similar qualities of elasticity and adhesiveness of the surface. A cushion of hair, cotton, wool, or other elastic fibrous material having a thin covering of india-rubber will answer the purpose. lt is attached to a loop or frame on the end of the wire C, to the opposite end of which a convenient handle, B, is affixed. This wire is of a suitable length to enable it to reach all parts of au ordinary lamp-chimney, and is curved, so as to allow the pad or cushion to readily reach the bilge of the chimney, the pad being rounded on its under side to conform thereto.
A bit of leather or cloth, d, connects the wire frame of the pad, and the small wire c, which is wound outside, secures both it and the pad to the frame.
A piece of clean, soft paper, f, vis placed in the chimney, the india-rubber surface of the pad pressed on it, and the instrument movedback and forth by one hand of the operator, while with the other the chimney is slowly turned to present new portions as fast as cleaned. The adhesiveness of thernbbercauses the paper to move with it over the smooth surface ofthe glass. and when too much soiled to clean well a new piece is substituted.
Cloth, chamois leather', or other material may be used in the same manner; but it is well known that paper is preferable for producing a clean and polished surface on glass. The lamp-black which adheres to lamp-chimneys is of such a greasy nature that it soon fouls the paper and renders it necessary to frequently substitute a fresh piece.4
The advantages of my invention are, that it cleans more rapidly than brushes by acting on a larger surface at once, more elfectually by enabling paper or other substance to absorb the lamp-black, which may bediscarded as soon as soiled, and it requires no cleaningitself, as no part of the instrument comes in contact with the smoke on the chimney.
What I claim as my invention', and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The herein-described instrument for cleaning lamp-chimneys by adhesion of an intervenin g fibrous substance, consisting of the pad A, of in dia-rubber or its equivalent, rod C, and handle B, constructed and operating substantally as set forth.
