FENCE-WIRE CLAMP.

DEHLER, of \Vonewoc, in the county of Juneau and State of \Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-\Vire Clamps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention contemplates certain new and useful improvements in fence wire clamps, and has for its object the production of a simple and inexpensive clamping device by means of which the horizontal wires of a fence can be readily and easily secured to their supporting cross-stays.

The invention will. be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective ot a portion of a fence provided with my improvement. Fi s. 2 and 3 are opposite enlarged end views of the clamp. Fig. 5% is a plan view. Figs. 5 and 6 are opposite side views. Fig. 7 shows the different parts of the clamp separated.

Referring to the drawings, A designates a series of horizontally-disposed fence-wires of the barb or prong type, and a the perpendicular cross-stays, preferably round and extended between the series of wires A.

B is the clamp for uniting these horizontal wires to the perpendicular stay. It consists of a bar I), of staple-like form, having flattened ends Z), in which are holes 11 the holes of the two ends being designed to be coincident. Beginning at one end the bar is bent or curved downwardly, as at b thence upwardly, as at b, and thence rearwardly, as at I), terminating at its other end. This bend or curvature is given the bar so that it will accommodate and hold the wire against the stay and yet have its two ends on substantially the same horizontal plane.

0 is a bolt, of cylindrical form in cross-section, provided at one end with a fiat head cl. This bolt is designed to be inserted through the coincident holes b so that it will lie at substantially right angles to the stay a. De-

tween the latter and said bolt is a wedge D, the outer side of which is tapered from end. to end, as at d". This wedge fits between the two corresponding sides of the staple like clamp and binds firmly between the stay and the bolt, and as it is forced downward said bolt is firmly bound in place and the two ends of the clamp are securely held together and prevented from slipping.

The advantages of my invention are apparent. It will be seen that I have provided an exceedingly simple and inexpensive clamping device for uniting the horizontal strands of wire to the series of crossstays. The bar com posing the staple-like clamp is so bent as to accbmmodate the wire in holding the latter against the stay, and at the same time the ends of said bar are on substantially the same horizontal plane, so that the binding-bolt can be readily inserted through the coincident holes therein. \Vhen so inserted the wedge is then positioned and driven downward, foreing the bolt firmly against the sides of the holes in the clamp and preventing the accidental loosening thereof without first rem oving or loosening the wedge.

A clamping device thus constructed is simple and inexpensive and is capable of being readily applied to any fence now in general use or in course of construction.

I claim as my invention 1. The combination with a fence-wire and its stay, of a clamp embracing said wire and stay, a bolt engaging said clamp and located substantially parallel with said fence wire, and a wedge between said bolt and said stay, for binding the former; substantially as set forth.

2. The combination with a fence-wire and its stay, of a clamp embracing said wire and stay, said clamp having coincident holes therein, a bolt inserted through said holes, and a wedge between said bolt and said stay, substantially as set forth.

The combination with a fence-wire and 9 its stay, of a clamp embracing said wire and stay and curved to accommodate said wire, the ends of said clamp being on substantially the same plane and having coincident holes therein the headed bolt inserted through said the sides of the elamp'and also between said boltandsaid stay, binding said bolt to its place, substantially as set forth.
