To aZZ whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, HUGO HASSIEPEN and BERNARD STOCK, of the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Table and Bed, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.

Our invention relates to a combined table and bed; and it consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of our combined table and bed, the same being shown in use as a table. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device shown in use as a bed. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional View taken approximately on the indicated line 3 3 of Fig. 2 and looking in the direction as indicated by the arrow in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken approximately on the indicated line 4 4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is an enlarged horizontal sectional view taken approximately on the indicated line 5 5 of Fig. 2.

Referring by numerals to the accompanyin g drawings, 1 indicates a rectangular framework that is mounted upon suitable supporting-legs 2. This framework being mounted upon the legs 2 always remains in the same horizontal plane. Therefore it will be referred to in the following description as the stationary frame or portion of the device. Hinged to one end of the stationary frame 1 is a folding frame 3, the same being rectangular in plan view and of the same size and construction as is the stationary frame 1. Vertically arranged upon the extreme outer ends of the side rails of both of the frames are rectangular strips 4, and located upon the outer faces of the side rails of the folding frame 3 adjacent the upper edges thereof are longitudinally-extending strips 5, the same being rectangular in cross-section. Located upon the inner faces of the side rails of the stationary and folding frames adjacent the lower ends thereof are rectangular bars 6, beneath which are located and held transversely-arranged slats 7.

8 8 indicate folding legs for the folding frame 3, the upper ends of said legs being located on the outer faces of the side rails of said folding frame and adjacent the outer ends thereof. Headed bolts 9 pass through these side rails and through the heads of the legs 8, and winged nuts 10 are located upon the screw-threaded portions of said bolts on the outer faces of the legs 8.

Hooks 11 are secured to the faces of the side rails of the folding frame.3 adjacent the upper ends of the legs 8, and eyes 12 are arranged upon the outer ends ofthe side rails of the stationary frame 1 in such a manner as to be engaged by said hooks 11 when the frames are folded and the device is in use as a table.

13 13 indicate a pair of leaves that perform the function of a table-top, and arranged upon the under sides of said leaves adjacent the ends thereof are rabbeted strips 14, the grooves in which are of such a size as to slide freely over the strips 4 and 5. Located upon the inner edges of these leaves 13 are ordinary dowel-pins 15.

16 indicates an ordinary leaf, in the edges of which are formed recesses so arranged as to receive the dowel-pins 15 when the leaves 13 and 16 are in position to form the tabletop.

17 indicates a series of ordinary bed-springs that are located upon the slats 7, and a flexible mattress 18 of any ordinary construction is arranged upon said springs 17 and in the frames 1 and 3.

WVhen the device is in use as a table, the frame 3 is folded onto the frame 1, the hooks 11 are engaged in the eyes 12, and the legs 8 lie along the sides of the frame 3 and are held in this position by tightening the winged nuts 10. The leaf 16 is located upon the top and center of the frame 3, and the leaves 13 are arranged upon each end of said top frame 3, the rabbeted strips 14 being passed over the rectangular strips 5 located upon the sides of said frame 3. As these end leaves are moved toward and against the center leaf 16, the dowel-pins 15 on said leaves 13 willenter the recesses formed in the center leaf 16.

When it is desired to transform the table into a bed, the operator first withdraws the leaves 13 and removes the leaf 16. The hooks 11 are now disengaged from the eyes 12 and the frame 3 is raised and swung upon its hinges until said frame occupies the same horizontal plane as does the frame 1. The winged nuts 10 are now loosened until the legs 8 can be swung into vertical planes and so that their lower ends will rest upon the floor. The winged nuts 10 are now tightened and said legs thus positioned will very efficiently sustain the outer end of the frame 3. The leaves 13 are now located upon the opposite ends of the frames 1 and 3, the rabbeted strips 11 secured to the inner faces of said leaves engaging the strips 4 upon the ends of said frames. It may be here stated that the rear ends of the grooves in these strips 11 are closed in order that when said leaves are so positioned upon the ends of the frames 1 and 3 they will be retained thereupon.

A combined table and bed of our improved construction is very compact, easily transformed from a bed to a table and vice versa, can be manufactured at minimum cost, and is very simple and efficient.

'We claim In a combined table and bed, a stationary frame, suitable supporting legs for said frame,

folding frame hinged to one end of said stationary frame, folding legs arranged to support said folding frame when the device is in use as a bed, a suitable mattress arranged and held within said frames, rectangular strips fixed upon the outer faces and outer ends of the side-rails of the stationary and folding frames, strips arranged upon the outer faces of the side-rails of the folding frame and adjacent the upper edges thereof, suitable leaves arranged to be located 011 top of the folding frame when the device is in use as a table and upon the ends of the frames when the device is in use as a bed, and rabbeted strips arranged on the under sides of said leaves that engage the rectangular strips arranged on the ends of the frames and upon the outer faces and top edges of the side rails of the folding frame.
