PLOW ATTACH M ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 558,098, dated April 14, 1896.
Application filed August 28, 1895. $er1'a1 No. 560,736. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BOIOE PARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Roanoke, in the county of Randolph and State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Plow Attachment, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in plows, and has special reference to the means for securing the plow point or shovel to the foot-piece or standard thereof.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple and efficienteXtension-piece to be used in connection with detachable plow-points, the said piece being in the 11ature of a clamp, which is adj ustably connected with the plow-standard, soas to becapable of longitudinal adjustment thereof, and which, with the aid of a clamping-bolt, is adapted to confine between it and the foot of the standard a plow point or shovel of any desired shape or description.
To this end the invention consists in certain novel features and details of construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described illustrated in the drawings, and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a small portion of a plow-beam, one of the standards thereof, and a plow point or shovel secured to said standard by means of the improved extension-clamp. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section through the lower end of the stand,- ard and also through the plow-point, extension-clamp, &c. Fig. 3 is a rear perspective view of the extension-clamp. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective of the spacing-plate.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates the standard or foot-piece of an ordinary plow, which, for the purpose of carrying out this invention, is provided at its lower end with a longitudinally-extending and vertically-disposed slot 2.
3 indicates a plow point or shovel, of any ordinary or preferred construction, which it is desired to attach to the standard 1.
4 represents the extension-clamp, which is secured to the front face of the standard 1 1by meansof a clamping-bolt 5, which passes through an opening in the part 4 and also extends through the slot 2 of the standard, 55
'held at the desired distance from the standard 1 or in parallelism therewith by means of a spacing-plate 6, which is introduced between the clamp 4 and the standard and provided with a dovetailed notch 7 centrally of its upper edge, which engages with a correspondingly-shaped rearwardly projecting stud 8, formed integrally with or secured to the clamp 4 and extending rearwardly a sufficient distance to enter the slot 2 in the standard. By means of this construction the spacin g-plate 6 is positively prevented from escape or accidental displacement while the parts are clamped together, and the rearwardlyprojecting stud or tongue 8 serves to lock the upper end of the extension-clamp and the entire device and effectually prevents the plow-point from canting to one side or the other.
9 designates an oppositely-disposed pair of stops or shoulders, which are in the nature of integral lugs or projections from the rear face of the extension-clamp. These stops serve to limit the upward movement of the plow or 0 shovel with relation to the clamp 4 and also prevent said plow point orshovel from turning relatively to said clamp.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that by loosening the nut on the bolt 5 the plow-point 4 may be removed and another point or shovel inserted in its place, after which said plow-point, together with the entension-clamp 4, may be moved longitudinally of the standard 1 for the purpose of bringing the point of the plow to the desired elevation for enabling thesame to penetrate the soil to any desired depth. By removing the extension-clamp 4 entirely the spacing plate 6 maybe slid from off the dovetailed tongue or stud 8 and replaced by one of greater or less thickness corresponding to the thick ness of the upper end of the plow point or shovel for enabling the clamp to confine the shovel between it and the standard with the desired pressure. The means for adjusting the elevation of the plow-point and providing for the attaching and detaching of the same will thus be seen to be very simple, and the clamp 4 will serve to extend the operative surface of the plow point or shovel a considerable distance vertically.
Changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a plow-standard provided at its lower end with a longitudinal slot, of aplow point or shovel clamped against the front face of said standard, an extensionclamp secured to said standard in front of the plow point or shovel and adjustable up and down on the standard, a bolt passing through said clamp and adjustable longitudinally within the slot in said standard, said extension clamp having its lower end arranged in front of and overlapping the upper end of the plow point or shovel in such manner as to confine said shovel between it and ssspos the standard, and the oppositelydisposed stop projections on the rear face of said extension-clamp engaging with the plow point or shovel, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination with a plow-standard having its lower end slotted longitudinally, of an extension-clamp secured to the front of said standard and adjustable up and down thereon, a bolt passing through said clamp and the slot in said standard, a plow point or shovel confined between said clamp and the front face of the standard, a rearwardly-projecting tongue or stud located centrally of the upper end of the extension-clamp and entering the slot in the standard and having a dovetailed cross-sectional shape, and a spacing-plate located in the plane of the plow point or shovel and disposed between said extension-clamp and plow-standard and having a dovetailed notch corresponding in shape to and adapted to take over said tongue or stud 011 the extension-clamp, whereby the clamp and spacing-plate are held in the proper relative positions, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
BOICE PARK.
