Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEO WILLIAM A. BEMIS, OF SPENCER, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVED GRATER AND EGG-BEATER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 55,807, dated June26, 1866.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. BEMIs, of Spencer, in the county of Worcester and Gommonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gombined Graters and Egg-Beaters 5 and I do hereby declare that thefollo wing is afull, clear7 and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a perspective View of my improved grater and egg-beater. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal central section on line A B, Fig. l; and Fig. 3 represents a top or plan view ot' the removable frame which supports the cutting-wires a and c.
To enable those skilled in the art to which my invention belongs to make and use the same, I will describe it.
In the drawings, A represents the upper half, and B the lower half, of the body of the beater.
rPhe parts Inarked A and B are open at their ends l and 2, but closed at their ends 3 and 4. The parts A and B are made in cylindrical form, the upper half, A, sliding into the lower half, B. In this instance the upper half, F, of the part B is made separately, and then soldered on over the outer surface of the lower part, Gr, the upper edge of the part marked G being turned in to form a ledge or projection, C, upon which the frameD rests when in place, as indicated in Fig. 2.
The lower part of A is corrugated, as seen at b, for the purpose of rendering the joint more perfect. ln lieu of corrugations or beads, or in connection with the same, a rubber ring or band maybe placed upon the outer surface of that part of A which slides into B, to secure a perfect and tight joint.
D represents a circular frame having wires c secured thereto. Cross-wires c may also be employed, if desired.
Upon the outside of the part B are guides d d, behind which a grater, E, is slipped. The grater can be easily removed and replaced Whenever desired. l
The operation is as follows: The top part, A, is removed and the eggs to be beaten are broken into the part B, when the top part, A, is slipped into place again, its lower edge crowding and holding frame D close down upon the ledge or projection C. The operator now takes the device in the hand, and holding the parts A B iirmly together, gives them a rapid reciprocating or back-and-forth motion, whereby the eggs are forced rapidly back and forth through meshes formed by the wires a and c. In this way eggs can be very quickly and easily beaten.
The device, when not in use as an egg-beater, can be employed as a grater.
It will thus be seen that my combined grater and egg-beater is not only a very eifective but useful device.
Instead of making the upper part, F, of the part B separately, the part B may be made in one piece and then the upper part of the same set out by machinery to receive the part marked A. In either case a ledge or projection must be formed to support frame D, so that said frame can be easily removed for cleaning whenever desired.
Having described my combined egg-beater and grater, what I claim therein as new and of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the lower half, B, of the body of the beater, of the removable frame D', provided with the cutting-wires c, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In combination with the egg-beater, the grater, moving in guides on the body of the egg-beater, the whole being constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes shown and described.
WILLIAM A. BEMIS.
