LIGHTING IMPLEMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 557,555, dated April 7, 1896. Application filed August 31,1895- $eria1No. 561,076. (No model.)
T0 on whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT F. OOOKE, of New York city, New York, have invented an Improved Lighting Implement, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a lighting implement adapted to ignite a fuse or taper by means of a tape carrying a series of percussion-caps.
The implement is so constructed that though a joint feed can be imparted to tape and fuse a separate feed can also be imparted to the latter, so that when the fuse once burns it can be kept burning for any length of time without igniting further caps.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved lighting implement with the case in section; Fig. 2, a side view, partly in section, thereof; Fig. 3, a
similar View at right angles to Fig. 2 with the cap j omitted; Fig. 4, an end View of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 a detail longitudinal section showin g the fuse-tube and propelling mechanism.
The letter a represents a tubular case made, preferably, of two connected sections, as shown, and formed with two longitudinal tubes a d of which one is adapted for the reception of a tape 12, carrying the percussioncaps, and the other is adapted for the reception of the taper or fuse c.
The rear end of the case a is open and telescopes a spring-cap d, to which is attached one end of a plunger 65, moving within a tubular guide 61 The free end of plunger cl terminates in a spring-finger d adapted to engage and feed the fuse c. A laterally-projecting arm (1 of plunger d bears against the rear end of a disconnected slide e. This slide terminates in a spring-finger e, that engages and is adapted to feed the percussion-tape b. The slide 6 is provided with an outwardlyprojecting stop 6 that moves in a slot f of a tubular guide f, which engages the slide. The percussion-tape Z) is furthermore engaged by two (more or less) firing-pins 9 that friction against the percussion-caps with which the tape is provided. A fixed finger h prevents back motion of fuse c, and a similar fixed finger i prevents back motion of the percussion-tape b.
the latter will thus friction against the firingpins g, that will ignite the tape 1), which in turn ignites the fuse o. The forward motion of the plunger d will have thrown the slide e forward, but the backward motion of the plunger will not be imparted to the slide, because the slide and plunger are disconnected. Consequently when the spring-cap d is now further manipulated to reciprocate plunger (1 the fuse will be fed forward while the percussion-tape will remain stationary. In this way the fuse can be played out to any suitable extent, so that it may remain ignited for any desired length of time. If the fuse is to be extinguished, the cap j is projected over the tube ato cut off the supply of air and simultaneously to push the slide e backward by means of the engagement between the cap j and the stop (2 Thus the slide is again brought into contact with the arm d of the plunger d and the parts are in proper operative position for the next ignition of the fuse.
What I claim is 1. A lighting implement composed of a case, a firing-pin, a plunger for feeding the fuse, and an independently-movable slide operated by the plunger and adapted to feed the percussion-tape, substantially as specified.
2. The combination in alightingimplement of a case having a pair of feed-tubes, with a firing-pin, a spring-plunger for feeding the fuse, an independently-movable slide having a stop and adapted to be engaged by the plunger, and with a cap adapted to engagethe stop, substantially as specified.
