Hill! I 151 x \lllll I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CLEM HACKNEY, OF JOLIET, ASSIGNOR TO THE FOX SOLID PRESSED STEEL COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
.BO DY-BOLSTER FOR CARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 557,070, dated March 24, 1896. Application filed February 13, 1894:. Serial No. 500,093. (No model.)
To all whom it may GOILOGVIL.
Be it kn own that I, OLEM HACKNEY, of J oliet, lVill county, Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Body-Bolsters for Cars, of which the following is a full, true, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improvement in body-bolsters forming part of the under frame of a car, and comprises a series of spacing-pieces connected to the top of the bolster, serving as separators for the longitudinal sills of. the car'and as supports for the truss-rods.
My invention will be readily understood I 5 from the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a lateral elevation of the spacing-pieces attached to the bolster; Fig. 2, a plan view of the spacing-pieces detached from the bolster, and Fig. 3 an end ele- 2o vation of the parts connected as shown in Fig. 1.
Reference-letter R indicates a body-bolster of usual and well-known construction, consisting of the parts X and Y, separated by 2 5 the spanners Z.
L designates the top center plate, which rests upon the lower center or base plate attached to the transoms conneetin g the trucks. These parts are not shown, as they are of common knowledge and form 110 part of my present improvement.
To the top plate of the bolster are secured, by rivets H or other suitable means, a series of spacing-plates A, A, B, B, and C. These plates are preferably composed of pressed, rolled or forged steel and are substantially of the shape shown in the drawings. They are provided with perforated flanged portions S, through which are passed the securingrivets.
The lower portions of the outer faces of sections A A are provided with inwardlysloping surfaces forming triangular openings between the sections and the plates X of the bolster. Similar triangular openings are formed between each end of sections B B and the bolster-plate X. The sections are attached to the bolster so as to leave vertical passages between their adjacent ends communicating with the triangular openings.
The vertical sections of the longitudinal sills of the cars are located within the openings formed between the ends of the spacingpieces. The lower flanges of these sills, usually made of channel steel, pass through the triangular openings between the spacing pieces and bolster and are secured to the latter by pins G, which are extended through the bolster and flange and headed. These pins are provided with tightening-nuts T bear- 6o ing against the under surface of the bolster.
The spacing-pieces A A B B are provided with depressions K, within which are seated the truss-rods extending from the end sills of the cars.
Spacing-piece O is provided with an opening 0 to permit access for connecting the center and base plates.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A series of spacing-pieces having perforated flanges, adapted to be riveted to a bolster for separating the longitudinal sills, substantially as described.
2. A series of spacing-pieceshavingdepres-. sions in their upper surfaces, forming seats for truss-rods, and having means for attachment to a bolster, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a bolster, of a series of spacing-pieces A, A, B and B; A and A being provided with inwardly-sloping surfaces on their outer ends, and B and B havin g similar surfaces at both ends of each, substantally as described.
4. The combination with a bolster and the spacing-pieces A, A, B, and B, of the central spacing-piece 0, provided with a rectangular opening 0, substantially as described.-
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of .0 two subscribing witnesses.
OLEM HACKNEY. Witnesses:
W. O. J ACQUETTE, JOHN E. PHILLIPS.
