L. c. WEGEPARTH.
HAIR OURLER. No. 557,038. Patented Mar. 24, 1896.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS O. XVEGEFARTH, OF NE\V YORK, N. Y.
HAIR-CURLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 557,038, dated March 24, 1896.
Application filed October 3,1895.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LoUIs O. WEGEFARTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hair-Curlers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a new and improved hair-curler of such construction that hair can be more or less tightly curled; and to accomplish this object the invention consists essentially in a hair-curler composed of a cylindrical body, an elastic secured at one end to one extremity of the body, and a rigid shank adapted to extend longitudinally along the body approximately half the length thereof and having one extremity secured to the elastic and the other extremity provided with a hook for detachably hooking into engagement with one end of the cylindrical body, whereby the hair to be curled can be engaged under either the elastic or the longitudinal shank, said shank serving to secure a tighter curl than the elastic.
The invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a hair-curler constructed in accordance with my invention; and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same, taken on the line a", as, Fig. 1.
In the accompanying drawings, the nu meral 1 indicates the cylindrical body, which is preferably hollow to secure lightness and enable the same to be economically manufactured. This body may be made of celluloid, paper, rubber, paper-pulp, or any other material suitable for the purpose. To one extremity of the cylindrical body is secured one end portion of an elastic 2, to the opposite end portion of which is engaged one extremity of a rigid shank 3. The other extremity of the rigid shank is constructed with a hook 3 for detachably hooking into engagement with the end of the cylindrical body Serial No. 564,527- (No model.)
opposite the end to which the elastic 2 is secured. The elastic 2 is preferably secured at one extremity to one end of the cylindrical body through the medium of a plug 4, inserted into the cylindrical body and clamping the elastic between the internal surface of the body and the external surface of the plug. The plug is preferably made hollow, so that it will be light in weight. The shank 3 is of rigid material, such as metal, and therefore is comparatively stifi. The shank is of a length sufficient to extend longitudinally along the cylindrical body approximately half the length thereof, all in such manner that the hair to be curled can be engaged under either the elastic 2 or under the rigid shank 3. The rigid shank serves to secure a tighter curl than the elastic, in that the shank presses the hair more firmly upon the cylindrical body than the elastic.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is As an improved article of manufacture, a hair-curler, consisting of a cylindrical body 1, an elastic 2 secured at one end to one extremity of the body, and a rigid shank adapted to extend longitudinally along the body approximately half the length thereof and having one extremity secured to the elastic and the other extremity provided with a hook for detachably hooking into engagement with one end of the cylindrical body, whereby the hair to be curled can be engaged under either the elastic or the rigid shank, said shank serving to/sec'ure a tighter curl than the clastic, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LOUIS C. VEGEFARTH. Witnesses:
